Oil Light flickering

My EVO 8 oil light flickered twice yesterday, both at idle. When it was flickering my oil pressure gauge is reading 30psi at idle. I know the factory OPS is located on the back of the block and my aftermarket OP is on the oil filter housing. The factory OPS and aftermarket OPS are around 7months old as I replaced them during the build. Should I be worried about the dummy light since I have the aftermarket gauge? Any clue to what might be wrong? I'm going to replace the OEM OPS this weekend.

Thanks

I would check the connection going to the oem oil pressure sensor/switch. It may not have "clicked" in all the way. Dipstick for sanity, then start to look elsewhere. Hopefully your oil pump is still doing fine.

Thanks, I'm going to check the switch and connections this weekend. I hope it isn't the pump as it's a brand new OEM pump, current build only has 800 miles on it. In the meantime, the car is parked

This has happened to me twice and both times it's been a dying factory oil pressure sending unit

That sucks man, Hopefully it will be easy to change since I don't have much on the driveside of the engine bay. Short route pipe, SD intake, and battery relocated to the trunk.

Any tips for the install since you changed it twice?

Thanks!

Any idea the oil temp when it was flickering? And what weight oil are you using?

I'm not sure of the temp but it's on Amsoil break-in oil.

You need to put normal oil in it. Amsoil break in oil is pretty thin, even for a straight 30wt. Who built the motor? Did they recommend an oil weight or do you know what your bearing clearances are?

Regardless, if you're getting 30psi on your gauge, but the warning light is flickering, it sounds like a bad switch or connection.

Still on the break-in period for another 200 miles, once that's done its going on 20-50(builder recommended). I'll swap the switch, put the 200 miles more on it then switch to 20-50 and report back.

Thanks

Amsoil break in oil is for the initial start up and first 20-30 minutes of run time. It's not intended to be left in the engine for any length of time.

And what is with these engine builders and long *** break in periods. Sigh..

Your builder has you driving around on break-in oil? That's really odd.

It wasn't too bad. It's right off of the oil filter housing (At least it is for my 9, dunno if it's different for an 8?). Probably took me 15- 20 minutes IIRC

Gotcha. The 8's have it on the block under the intake manifold...

It sounds like the sending unit is indeed faulty. However I've found that when the oil is thin i.e when its really hot mine would have a tendency to flicker too. This was on S2s with an idle set for around 1000RPM. Bumping the idle may have helped the case but I didn't really care.

At some point in the past I did replace mine as I thought it may have been the culprit for an elusive oil leak(it wasnt). But on the VIII its located in the back of the block. I believe I got to it from above with a socket.
