Cop pack failure

Hey so idk if I am posting this in the correct spot I'm sorry in advance. So I am burning out coil packs on a cop system not spooling up but it is identical. At least I think. It has the denso coils # 02240 so the first problem was a coil just went out about 10k into having them installed. I just thought it was a fluke sometimes you get a bad one. I replaced with a new denso . Now about 4k later I was driving in 95 degree weather (summer in was) lol with the ac on for about 2 weeks no problems then I go to juice on it and it spools up fine at 1/4 petal as soon as it starts getting down more than 1/4 petal it miss fires. So I go home figure it can't be my coilpacks so I throw new ngk iridium 7 in it gapped to .024 thinking my plug gap had grown and was getting blow out.. new pugs nice gap runs great until in boost. No vacuum leaks still pulls -25 vacuum and no weird idle besides the cossworth cams lol . So I'm thinking it's a coilpack issue and from the research I have done it seems some peolpe install longer springs in the coil packs to make sure they our making contact. As this is what I suspect is burning out coil packs...

So my questions our what else can cause miss fires under load but will run smooth even in boost I hit 14 psi 1/4 petal as soon as I did any more miss fire.. could it be the cas sensor ?

My next question is why do people change to the longer coilpack spring as seen on spooling ups website is this something the coilpack builder Missed? There our jdC and I have been very happy with them and his help sending new coil packs.

Any help would be appreciated! Car is on 20psi stock turbo with stock style bov built head o2 dump stock intake manifold tb running maf with old dirty hks filter. Sorry for spelling and grammar.

Clean your air filter. Make sure the screen is still in place in the MAF. Swap in some known good stock coils if you can. You shouldn't have any ignition issues with your setup.

If you are blowing through coils your ignition dwell times might be too high, that is something you have to change in the rom itself. Beware there are denso counterfeit ignition coils that look nearly identical to the real ones but they don't perform well. They will still say denso on them and have the part numbers on them and are even packaged in toyota/lexus boxes. I recently had to deal with something similar and I ended up getting yaris coils at my local junk yard which fixed the problem.

Cop

Thanks for the quick responses. I will wash the filter and check the maf out. I didn't know they went thru all that BS to scam people that's upsetting! I am still under warranty thru the company so they our sending me a new one. I will try it one at a time until I figure out the culprit, unless someone know a better way to check coils for a underload test ? So nobody thinks they need longer springs? Inside the coil boot? Also I am tearing up the house/ garage trying to find my stock ones😤 to see if it's the coils at all?!!

Cop dwell

Thanks also for the info about the dwell. I don't know anything about that and when the car got tuned it got cut short due to time restraints so it has a safe tune but could make a bunch more power. Is what the tuner said. So you're suggesting it could be because I didn't have a quality tune or enough time getting tuned?

Can you try a closer gap like .020 and see if that helps your break up in boost?

02240 coils definitely need longer springs. if you were sold 02240 coil packs without longer springs i'd go back to the seller and tell him to fix his wrongs for all four coils

It could have a solid tune but the dwell times might be too high, some tuners when tuning on a stock ignition setup increase the dwell times to fight spark blowout and depending on what dwell times they used they may be too high for a cop setup because the coils are getting over charged which will cause them to prematurely fail. As for the coil springs, you can stretch the existing ones, you could also go to your local hardware store and make your own longer spring.

Thanks for all the info. I'm going to keep looking for my stock coils if I find them I will throw them in. Check maf screen and filter go for a spin. If it still does it I will gap down to .020 I also called my tuner just to pick his brain and see if he has time to check it out. I am waiting for a response from him.

Up date

Hey guys I'm posting a update . so I found my stock coils im going to put those in and see what happens. If it fixes it than put in my new coil denso replacement for the cop system and see what happens. Now as far as not having this problem again I called my tuner and asked about the coil dwell times and he said he is and was well aware of what not to do with or with cop system however he did suggest that evos have a bad factory ground system and that could be a issue. I did some research on this site and I will probably add a cheap homemade ground kit on. So tomorrow will tell I can't wait to see what happens stupid night shift and sleep... I will keep you guys posted.

The 90919-02240 are the same as the 673-1306, where do I pick up the longer springs? I've observed my contact springs in the -1306 are almost a wear item.

-EDIT- N/m, found the information on stretching the coil springs - https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...pack-help.html

So on the stock coil packs car runs great no miss fire . So now in the next few days I will figure out which one of my cop coils is failing. Then I will most likely strech all springs and add a ground kit.

Start with stretching the springs a bit and go from there

Ground kit isn't needed.

If the stock coils run fine, why bother with messing with the COP kit?

Update

Added grounds new coil burnt out in 3k or less same coil #3 cylinder so idk I'm probably going to inspect wiring on cop harness. Totally lame ! I'm thinking about junk yard coils and re do the harness.. people say add grounds to that? Idk I'm probably going to run on stock coils for a while...
