Engine Knocking
Engine Knocking
Ok, first off I had the EMS installed yesterday. Today while driving, when I switched into 2nd I heard a noise and then a 'knocking' sound. Now it is always there and doesn't go away. With the higher the RPM, the faster the noise gets. I am assuming that it's a piston. So I brought it to a mechanic that worked on race cars and he said just by listening to it that the rod is shot. He asked me if I heard a noise and I said yes, he said that it detonated and I would have to get a new bottom end which would prob be about 4,000 depending on how expensive Mitsubishi is. Does this sound right to you? Thanks.
It sounds reasonable if the engine was detonating. You should take it to a good local mechanic and get a second opinion.Judging by the fact that you have an EMS I would say you don't care about a warranty, If you do need a new bottom end you should get a stroker kit. It's probably close to the Mits. would charge you for parts.

Well, I presume you are running good gas? If not try to get some 94, or 93 and put in a gallon of Xylene.
But then again, I would think the ECU would compensate for bad fuel and pull timing. So heck, idunno.

Toda makes a good kit from what I have heard. I also believe Jun and Tomei make quality kits as well. I would definately get a second opinion first and maybe have someone drop the oil pan and give it a good look.
make mitsubishi replace the engine. the 4g63 is notorious for destroying rod bearings! mitsubishi installed a new block in my car. two months later (no mods) the rod bearing was shot. my guess is it was a factory defect and not something you did to the engine.

I will wait now and see what
has to say about it. Good luck on that one right?
