Bad sounds after heavy launch, need diagnosis help!
Hey everyone thanks for stopping by to potentially lend a hand!
I'll get straight to the point, but a bit of background information.
I have a JDM Evolution VII with 112xxxKm that I've only for only about a month. The car did run and drive great and is stock other than a megan catback, K&N filter and a BOV. Also, the clutch was replaced at 95xxxKm with an ACT "Heavy duty street performance clutch" (I can get the exact model if anyone cares). Car is on stock? boost showing around 17-19psi on my analog gauge.
Anyway, after a hard night of driving I pulled over on the highway and decided to show my buddy a launch in the car. I have launched the car once before and it went fine but this time, not so good.
So 1st gear, high rpms and a dump of the clutch but unfortunately the car doesn't launch and makes a bad sound. After, the car won't move in first, second or reverse and just makes a spinning, grinding sound as the clutch begins to engage.
Next I get it towed home and now up on stands, but when I go to replicate the sound to potentially track it down a little better, everything seems perfect..
With no force being applied to the wheels and all 4 wheels on lifted on stands, I can completely get the car into first gear as if it's driving on the ground. If my eyes were closed and you told me we were rolling down the street I'd believe you.
Anyone experienced this?

Uh yea, you launched the worst possible way and grenaded your transfer case more than likely. The wheels are still spinning in the air because there's probably just enough material on the teeth left to engage and spin. Drain your fluid and you will find all sorts of metal chunks and pieces.

It's ok you live and learn (and pay for it) so you're gonna think twice before you go launching. Happy wrenching.
Bye-bye TC!
Preload the drivetrain and learn the slip-dump method used to launch AWDs in the future. The Evo driveline hates shocks caused by clutch dumps and will break with careless launching methods - if you're going to do it, let the wear item (clutch) take the abuse. It's cheaper to replace.
