Evo 8 Bucking at 5k rpm WOT

Stock turbo, the car won't go pass 5k rpm and violently bucks as if hitting a brick wall but I can slowly creep beyond 5k rpm just not wide open throttle. I have a VTA blitz bov installed from the previous owner. Already ordered a GFB Respons BOV to recirculate the intake. I have a turboXS MBC that is all the way loose. In the sound file, the car starts to hesitate at around 4k rpm then at 5k rpm violently pops (backfire?).

Probably fuel related , maybe fuel pump on its way out or may even be the coil packs. How many miles on your car? Some info on car ..... tuned, do you have stock ignition coil packs and I’m assuming your probably running at least a 255 lph fuel pump if your tunes?

Sound like spark plug blow out, might want to check your ignition, I would check my coils if you did the spark plugs already.

134k mileage, its running NPboosted coilpacks. I don't know how long its been there. I also have stock fuel pump and it has no tune. Mods are just intake, catback, intercooler and a bov.

Don't wanna spend money for an e-tune just for a fuel pump, bigger intercooler and an intake. I'm gonna try putting back the oem coil and cleaning them see if that fixes it. I'm getting my boost gauge tuesday and I'll be able to see how much boost its running.

My bet is the aftermarket coil packs put good working OEM's on and see if that helps

Thumbs up

For anyone having the same problem, we changed the after market coil pack we had and replaced it with the old oem coil and that fixed the problem. We found out the cylinder 4 coil tube spring was bent. But like always with these type of cars theres another new problem. The boost was running max at 10 psi and we hear leaks bubbling (coolant?). Saw coolant leaking from the exhaust manifold. Thanks for those who helped out.

So we tried flushing the coolant and it was pretty dirty. What ya'll guys think? Btw, we found that the thermostat is also leaking coolant. It was wide open. We used water and coolant. No smoke from exhaust. No coolant on dipstick. When I opened the radiator cap, the inside fin was dirty when i dip my fingers in (black particles) I thinks thats just build up.

Oil or normal coolant?

The radiator was not fully flushed out/cleaned after we bought the car. So we cleaned it up today and will be buying a new thermostat tomorrow and see if we get the same result. I'll try to keep a look at the exhaust manifold gasket more closely if coolant will seep out/form air bubble again from last time we tried adding coolant.

I would perform a compression/ leak down test so you don't waste time and money doing other things when you might have bigger issues
