6-spd lost 4th gear question
6-spd lost 4th gear question
Hi all,
I'm considering buying a 6-spd Trans that the seller lists as 4th gear not working.
I purposely interested in this transmission so I can get it rebuilt and upgraded for reliability.
Anything in particular I should look our for? Lasy thing is i want to end up paying more for tge rebuild than had i bought a working transmission.
From my research, this is a common issue.
Thanks!

4th gear in the 6 speeds is the thinnest and therefore weakest of the bunch. It is likely wrecked along with the matching gear on the other shaft.
If you are getting it rebuild, this is all fixable and maybe even would get replaced if you do an aftermarket 6 speed gear set. As for if you'll spend more, I think its all a crap shoot but generally a good rebuild would do all the wear items anyways so it shouldn't matter much.

First, finding replacement parts is almost impossible.
Second, even if you can find the parts.. or even an upgraded gearset, the trans still has inherent build issues that you can't fix.
If you find a way to get it working again, the chances are very, very high that it will fail again, possibly in a catastrophic way that can't be repaired. It's not worth it. This is based on my experience with two 6spds that I went through because I REFUSED to swap in a 5spd. I loved the 6spd but it wasn't good for anything other than daily driving, which is definitely not what I use my car for, unfortunately. I went through two 6spds that ended up going to the dump because they became useless paperweights.
