Ack!

My as yet unmodified Evo has had its first problem. Last night, while coming around a corner at about 25mph, I heard a loud pop. The engine died almost immediately, shuddering to a stop. It will turn over, but it clearly wants to die, and there's smoke coming out of the exhaust. A quick check under the hood revealed no loose hoses, though admittedly I could have missed something. I did gas up just minutes earlier, and though I paid for 93 octane, I'm kinda thinking I pumped sludge in there, since I more or less had an empty tank, and filled up, and it's been running fine before.

Obviously, I had it towed to Mitsubishi. I wonder though, if anyone had any ideas as to what else it could be. Or what that pop was. And maybe if it is bad gas, what the best course is to getting the station owner to sort me out.

Not even Friday, but I suspect my weekend is already ruined.

where you under boost when you made the turn? It was probably a hose that popped of the intercooler piping somewhere. More than likely it is a hose near the bottom of the car on one of the sides of the intercooler.

It could be the gas. There was a thread about sulfur in gas in some parts of the country that just start to kill engines.

I looked on either side of the intercooler and all seemed well, but like I said, I could have missed something. And I sincerely hope it's something that simple. And yes. I'm almost always in boost. Habits from driving VVTLi.

Well, here's the update: As it turns out, it was a hose. One of the clamps came off. Thank goodness.

Out of curiosity, does this happen a lot?

Yes it can happen a lot. What I suggest you do is use a wratchet and socket to tighten the clamps instead of a screwdriver. Another thing to do is to upgrade to t-bolt clamps.

hose coming off

By chance was it your fuel pressure regulator hose?
It is located in the passenger rear area of the engine compartment right behind the oil cover next to the intake manifold. I had this one come off under boost. ITs very common. Especially if your using a boost controller. Just reattach it with a hose clamp.

The same thing happened about a week after I got my car. I was driving down the street and hit the gas as soon as the turbo spooled I herd a POP! And the car sputtered and died. I was like "What the Hell?!" Popped the hood and the hose from the intercooler to the throttle body had blown off due to a loose hose clamp! Now I tighten the hose clamps when I change the oil just to be sure.

I don't know that blowing off the hose is super common (it hasn't happened to me or many of the other EVO owners I know..) But it does happen... Generally I check these things periodically, but never noticed anything loose...At least it was nothing major!

I checked a few of the hose clamps under the hood. The only one that was loose was on the BOV.
