External Wastegate

Hey guys, I have been pondering about this for a while. How is the external wastegate whistle if it does at all comparing to the whistling sound of a BOV? Is it loud like a BOV? From what I understand, the ext. wastegate release pressure built inside the turbo and so it performs in the same manner as the BOV releasing pressure inside the IC. Is that true? Well, just curious...

doesn't really sound like a BOV... sounds more like an open header

Nope, the BOV dumps pressure either to atmosphere or back to the intake side of the turbo when you let go of the accelerator. This is to prevent very high pressure between the closed throttle and the turbo which slows the spinning turbo fast and it then takes longer to start spinning it again and produce boost. Also that high pressure can damage the turbo in the long run.

The wastegate is what controls how much of the exhaust gases that passes through the turbo and thus controls the boost. Normally the wastegate vents back to the exhaust pipe and you don’t hear much of it. You could have an open wastegate dump and much as Tofurky said that would sound like an open header. Hope this cleared some question marks?

A wastegate throttles the amount of exhaust gas that passes through the turbo, which is how it controls boost. I had an external dumping o2 housing on my 1g. It was cool at first, but go old quick. The noise was unbearably loud and everytime the wastegate opened, all the exhaust fumes would enter the cabin. Not cool in a street car IMO. You can always route the dump tube to go out the side of your bumper though. A few RRE cars do.

quite simply
when a wastegate opens up, it sounds like your downpipe fell off

You can put an externally dumping o2 housing on. Then your internal wastegate could dump to atmosphere. Or you and weld an external wastegate to your exhaust manifold and keep the stock turbo's internal wastegate closed.

A wastegate is just a valve that modulates how much exhaust goes through the turbo. You can place it anywhere between the engine and turbo.

Thank you guys for the info. I'm giving a good thought on the BR500. Cheap and it works.

Mount the wastegate off the exhaust manifold.
