About the only break-in we give cams after install is idling and driving the car for 10-15 minutes just before it is strapped down on to the dyno. And we install cams on at least 2 to 3 EVOs per week.

just my 2c,

For those who broke in their cams with synthetic oil and taking it easy for 100 miles, has anyone had any problems with their cams ?

I think at least 90% of the evo owners break their evo in wtih synthetic, and no problem with engine up to 30K miles or more. And if mitsu want you to break their cars in with sythetic, I dont see what's the problem.

On the same application, why cant we break the cams in with synthetic? Doesnt make any sense. I broke my evo in based on the user manual and I'm at 19K, no problem so far. (touch wood)

I guess it doesnt really matter as long as you dont go ***** out on the car right after you put them in.

1. just because you do it wrong and you get away with it more often than not doesn't mean it's a good idea.

2. read the link I posted a few months back earlier in this thread.

Cams, or headwork in general, requires no breakin. Generally the motor with the best power is a fresh head on a seasoned block.

I understand where you are coming from in regards to a proper break in process.

I guess I put a little faith into the millions of dollars Mitsubishi has spent engineering these motors. If breaking in engine parts with synthetic oil is so bad, why does Mitsubishi Motors do it ?

I read the article posted by ColinL but didn't see anywhere in it where it said WHY synth oil shouldn't be used. All it says is "don't use it". That's a pretty weak reason. Personally I don't see how cam/spring break in should be any different then new car break in.

How do any of you know that Mitsubishi doesn't fire them up and run them at 2500 for 15 minutes before they even drop them in the car?
