Blew My Engine Road Racing - Need a Rebuild ASAP
Meta,
sorry to hear bout your problem.
I'm also experience some problem on my engine too. I have preignition happen on one of the cylinder and cause major damage on the piston. I have started to take the engine aparts as I wrote. Found damages on 1 & 2.
I'm also running AEM EMS and the knock control was not on.

Can you guys post the maps that are causing all this detonation? What A/F were you running? Doug at Boost Solutions tunes my car and I never have problems. You guys can call him or PM him anytime(Badazzcar). I too blew a piston skirt in the past. It was a combination of lean tuning from another shop, off roading, and an over-rev. I'm sure if you post your maps Doug will help you. Good luck and sorry to hear about your problems.

Meta, I don't mean to hijack your thread. But it's seems like you experiencing the same problem as I've now. I'm hoping all vendors in this forum can help out.
Here is a few pics of my engine piston and cylinder head. Notice, a chuck of the piston is totaly gone. Looks like piston melt down to ring groove no. 1. Ring 1 is totally gone. The pics is cylinder 1 & 2.

Well, thanks for the help guys. I just got off the phone with Adam from Z1, I really appreciated him calling me (especially when he was on vacation in NC) and he gave me some ideas. Mainly he was saying that none of the signs sounded good. But I really appreciate him calling, and will be doing even more business in the future with him.
I also talked to Mark @ Quantum, he has a core and an awd dyno so I'll be getting some pricing. He was also very nice and helpful. I'm going to call David Bushur when I'm free. And I checked the timing belt and it's tight.
Everyone seemed to be saying the detonation spots on the plugs, paired with the compression test, pair with the spark plug gap being closed sounded like a completely blown 2 & 3 piston.

JD, darn it Dude, this whole thing really blows some hard steam. One little bit of advice I have for you and I hope you really consider it....Go with David at Buschur's for your rebuild, I doubt there is one single person or shop out there who has studied these engines to the extent that Dave, Dan, and Tym have. I know, I was there a few years back for some work and saw first hand what these guys go through with testing these motors inside and out, from head down to the pan, from stroked to bored and everything in between. They will build you a motor that'll spin to 9,500 and hold 30 psi of boost and all for a fair price considering all you're getting. They have always treated me topnotch and I have never been let down by them, I was the one who just recently screwed up big time with an offer they made to me and I could not make the trip. Boy let me tell you, when the BUSCHURS extend their help to you, DON'T let it slip away, trust me its worth the 500 mile trip. This is all these guys out there do, is 4g63. Dude, please save yourself the headache and do it right the first time out.......Givem a call, you wont regret it. Best wishes and GOD BLESS!!!!!! Rick, the 4BANGR
chinalfr, obviously I wouldn't jump to any major conclusions based on two 100kb pics but it appears your head might have escaped significant damage. also, do you have disassembled pics of the shortblock-- I'm not sure I agree with the 'melted to the first ring' idea on #1. it looks more like the crown is damaged-- it would be hard for the combustion chamber and valves to not be destroyed if you break off that much of a piston.
you probably do have ring damage, but it can't be seen from your first pic IMO.

Well, I'll be heading out to Wakeman, Ohio tonight or tomorrow morning. Renting a U-Haul trailer and dropping it off at Buschur. David has been very nice and helped me understand what went wrong. It sucks to have this happen, it really sucks because it's expensive to rebuild a shortblock, but David is helping me out and he really is a great guy. He may be a little brash and defensive on the boards, but I assure you he really is a great guy, just defensive when people make accusations or remarks about him. So, in short, thanks to the Buschur gang for helping me get back on the road and not have to take out a loan.
And if anyone is interested I have a set of brand new Team Dynamics wheels in 17in with brand new Hoosier R3S04s in 245/40 that I may sell to help pay for this. I may take a slight loss, so pm me if your interested.

Please, please, please keep us up to date with your progress and with whatever you guys find out for a root cause. While it really sucks that this happened, this sort of information is really useful for the rest of us that are on similar paths as you in terms of mods, engine management and the type of usage that killed your motor.
Thanks,
Steve

If you want to know the cause pm me, this thread is closed, my pain is over.
And, I want to say once more, I just talked to David again, Buschur racing is the most standup group of guys I've talked with.

ColinL, the pics is taken by me while removing the cylinder head off the engine last Sat. Yesterday I dropped the oil pan and removed both 1 & 2 piston/connecting rod. I didn't get a chance to snap more pics as I didn't carry any camera with me.
The first ring on piston no. 2 is totaly gone. Snap into pieces. I can see tiny bits of broken metal on my cat. If you look carefully on the 1st pics, you should able to see a fragment of the ring sitting on the piston top.
From the observation, I believed the preignition and detonation cause my engine problem. I have a 2 fault spark plug incidents before my engine break loose.
As of my cylinder head, it does sustain some damage (deep scratches). No valve damage.
I will snap more pics later. Heading out to the garage now.

Good luck. Keep us all informed on how it works out and what the root problem was. As someone said before there are tons of ppl out there running the same or similar mods as you and will like to know what to avoid to prevent this kind of mess.
I think it's improper tuning that caused this as the 4g63 is bullet proof unless you got stuck with a bad motor. Only a tuner will be able to diagnose the cause after taking a look at your motor and settings.
Anyway, good luck and keep up that positive attitude.

That motor looks so horrible that you would be able to audibly hear the knock. Wow it still amazes me to see engines tuned like this
if you would like any help gimme a P M
