Some drivers will fall into that category, but with the amount of tranny complaints we get here on the forums I can honestly blame build quality for those failures. Some trannies are in spec and built right and some are not BY the way, I have personally driven over 30 different Evos and this is how I come to this conclusion.
I agree it seems to be the luck of the draw...no idea why 30k and still on stock clutch no tranny issues at all...My fathers evo 7 in the UK has done 7K and is needing a new clutch this week...on his Subaru 4cam Turbo he got 70k from the stock clutch....certainly not driver error IMO

90GSX, I too take similar care of my Evo and it has given me no problems whatsoever. I drive it hard as well, stock clutch still holding fine. I do not however drive it daily. I've had possesion of the car since March of 03 so I assume that it too, was one of the fist here.

Nice write up. I'm very maticulous about my car also, as a previous mechanic I know what it takes to keep a car running to the best of its ability. Even with all the maticuous maintenance and careful driving, you still can't over look the design flaws in the Evo Tranny. I just turned 22K on mine I thought I was out of the woods on the tranny problems until now. It started to faintly make a clanking noise about 17K when decelerating in 3,4,5 gears. Its progressively gotten so loud I have to turn up the radio so I don't hear it. I'm currently building a case to send to the dealership with a list of dealerships that have did the tranny rebuilds and RR's. I'm still waiting for word on what they are going to do with mine. I will likely have to go to Houston or somewhere else to have it done since my local delaership does not have someone that can do the tranny work.

Again this is just info to help those witht he same issues. I made the choice on the purchse of my car, and I would reccommend everyone if not to buy one, drive one and see just how much fun you can have in a car. Again nice write up.

i disagree that its all driver error on the shifting part. Several times i have shifter 1-2 and 3-4 where it would grind no matter what.

It only happens at high rpms, and when you shift fast. It wouldnt matter how far i pushed the clutch in on the 1-2 shift, i sould sometimes have it pressed all the way to the floor and iw ould try 2-3 times and it wouldnt go into gear. It happens because you shift too fast for the synchros to catch up. also the same thing with 3-4. If i shift fast, it doesnt matter how far i push the clutch, if you have a fast shift it will grind with some cars.

Ive been driving for 10 years and ever single car i have ever owned was a stickshift and i have never ever had a problem like this. Its not driver error.

very interesting post and pics.

one comment though-- you drive *very spiritedly* and have substantial tread (you said 50%) on the original tires at the 15k mile service?

something doesn't add up...

Lots of my miles have been accumulated from driving twice from Paducah, KY to Gulfport, MS (about 7 hours one way) and once back and forth from Paducah, KY to Norfolk, VA (about 11 hours one way). When I am driving around town or normal daily driving, I drive this car VERY hard, but never beyond the limits of it.

I can believe it, pending on the in city and hwy driving he does. Heres an example. I drive 25 percent of the time on the Hwy cruising, and 75 percent of the time communting in the city. I got 19K on the stock Advans and thats with 2 SCCA races and muliple sprints with my buddy who has the same car. There is another guy I know in the military that drives alot of hwy driving, and very little city driving he got 23K on his stock Advans. Its possible.
