metal hitting metal noise

i was driving today and heard this metal to metal clanking sound when i shifted to second rather harshly. i wasn't in high revs at all but i wasn't too smooth with my clutch and gas pedals. it was the noise of metal to metal so i thought it might be a lower tie bar hitting my exhaust piping. anyone know what i mean? anyone know what this is?

I've heard this too. It doesn't happen every 1->2 shift but when pushing the clutch with added force I tend to hear it more frequently. Don't know what is though, probably tranny related if I had to guess. Wish I knew.

Differential? Mine clanks quite loud when going from reverse to 1 or 1 to reverse. It sounds like I'm rolling over a loose sewer cap or something.

I've only heard it when the roads are dry and I have my window open. It's not something I hear all the time either, mainly when I'm in making short movements (i.e. driveway, parking lots).

I believe the noise I heard on my car was the downpipe banging against the bottom of the car.
