Help - Oil change disaster!!

Hey all,

I just changed my oil as always with Mobil 1 5W 30 and the "old" oem oil filter. I start the car and see that the oil light is on, WTF! I look under the car and oil is pouring out.

It was coming from the filter. I can't find a pic, but is the part where the oil filter screws on threaded all the way to the end??? Mine is not, and I'm not sure if I stripped it or if I just didn't tighten the filter enough. before I try again, I want to confirm that it's NOT threaded all the way down.

I'll go take a pic, but please help!!!!

make sure you got the right type oil filter,it will be almost impossible to cross thread it...it has to be threaed all the way to the top where it makes the seal..

I bought 5 of the "old" md part no oil filters awhile back, this is the last one. I compared it to the last one and it's identical.

Here is a pic, I don't think i pulled the threads off, I must have just not tightened enough. DOH DOH DOH!

I wanted to make sure it wasn't threaded to the end before and the threads were IN the oil filter. Believe it or not, I've changed the oil in the car like 7 or 8 times, but I was still able to fug it up.

Tighten it until the gasket makes contact with the surface. Then tighten it another 7/8 to compress the gasket and make a tight seal.

Should be no biggie as long as you are using synthetic and killed the engine soon enough. Everybody makes bone-headed mistakes, so don't beat yourself up.

I am using a Pur One filter on my Evo, and it is pretty small. As a matter of fact, it is the same filter used on my 03 civic EX (14610). I was sweating it pretty bad when I did my oil change last week, wondering if it was a misprint in the Purolator book! All seems to be well.

Put a new filter on there, fill her up with the factory recommended 10w-30 synthetic, and roll on!

Andy

Also make sure that when you pull the old filter off that the gasket comes with it. My brother was changing his oil and the old gasket came off the filter and stayed on the threads and when he put the new filter on it pressed the gaskets together and all his oil dumped out.

=P I did that on the first oil change with a mitsu filter (which I still use). I actually cross threaded the filter and it felt like it was fully seated. Obviously was not! Oil poured everywhere in my garage =(. Oh well. that was 30,000 miles ago...I'm over it. I felt the filter after it happened on the top and it was slightly canted to one side...negligable...not. feel all the way around and make sure it is seated evenly all the way around.

simple tip....next time u change your oil, look under the car for signs of leaking before u start it up after you are done with the oil change. I've caught a few loose filters in my time by doing that.

Thanks guys,

I just panicked that I had stripped the threads, but it was just that I wasn't careful threading the oil filter. It's all good now, but I'm having a hell of a time cleaning the garage and apologizing to the wife, hehe.

Oh well, that what I get for trying to mow the lawn, change the oil in both cars, and take care of my 4 month old daughter with little sleep, lol.

I also changed the oil in my wife's CR-V, so I was being extra careful to make sure her car didn't burst into flames. There was an article on how this happened to 27 of the ~thousands and thousands of CR-Vs sold. I went for two 20 minute drives and then made sure there were no leaks.

In my car, the oil didn't leak until I started it. I always look under and check the drain plug and filter area, but obviously I didn't look at the filter very carefully since it must have been skewed. I also watched the oil light when I started it, and when it didn't go out after 2 or 3 seconds, I immediately killed the motor.

Take care,

FB

I used this same filter my last change.. the oil seems to stay a lot cleaner witht his filter. I've heard there is a bigger pure one filter that fits the evo but I can't find anyone that has the part #

the correct purolator filter is the PL14459, as it is the same size as the stock filter.

I had something similiar happen to me once in another car. The OEM ring gasket had hopped slightly out of it's seat when I tightend the filter and the gasket ended up being pinched and not sealing. I caught it right after starting the car, but it managed to shoot oil (under preasure) all over the engine bay...
