~ Lousy Service Advisory ~

OK - here it is:

FAIR WARNING: ALL MITSUBISHI EVOLUTION VIII DRIVERS

~ LOUSY SERVICE ADVISORY ~

August, 2004

"I believe virtue shows quite as well in rags and patches as she does in purple and fine linen"

~ Charles Dickens ~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
* SERVICE ADVISORY: ALL MITSUBISHI EVOLUTION VIII DRIVERS
FAIR WARNING: All Mitsubishi Evolution VIII drivers... Do not present your EVO VIII for factory service, at an authorized Mitsubishi dealership, without your tyres in otherwise perfect condition. Be advised Mulholland Raceway Driver's Group is in receipt, thus far, of no less than four dozen accounts of owners having presented their Evolotion VIIIs, to as many Mitsubishi service advisors, but to be denied warranty coverage on the basis of tyre abuse, and/or to have been issued reprimands or warnings for having aggressivly driven their vehicles, and/or to have been arbitrarily recorded on their service histories as "aggressive drivers," and/or to be denied warranty coverage, on that basis, to include components wholly unrelated to high performance driving. Mulholland Raceway Driver's Group highly recommends all Evolution VIII drivers mothball their OEM tyres, and wheels, preserve them, in their OEM state, until the terminal end of warranty coverage, in the event it becomes necessary to service their vehicles ~
~ What is wrong with those people? (!!!) ...We do not understand what it is Mitsubishi hopes to accomplish. The whole point of a derivative flagship vehicle is to bolster brand loyalty, not to defecate upon it.
~ Original owners falling-out, like we haven't seen, in decades. En mass, original owners are bailing out on their EVOs, well before 30 thousand, on their odometers. We haven't seen the for sale signs going up, this fast, on a performance vehicle, since the Cosworth Vega, and the infamous Ford Pinto platform derivative Mustang II Cobra, way back in the mid 1970s. Amongst the strangest stories we've ever heard, we are getting an earful on this Mitsubishi thing.
~ In droves, Evolution VIII owners, privating us war stories with regard to unfair treatment, having been arbitrarily singled-out, and punished, at the hands of authorized Mitsubishi dealerships. Good God, we haven't seen anything like this, since the SVO Mustang debacle, of the 1980s.
~ Did Mitsubishi penetrate Subaru's market, but only to subsequently generate profound misgivings, having done so? Is it the case Mitsubishi didn't take a good, long, sobering look before having lept, head first, into Subaru's market? Did they really think people were going to flock, in droves, to buy Evolution VIIIs, and not drive them, accordingly?
~ We don't understand if, having entered Subaru's market, whether it's the case that Mitsubishi is unable to intellectualize its plight, or if perchance it's the case, otherwise, that they're merely being grossly unfair, mean spirited, knowing full-well they're being grossly unfair, and mean spirited?
~ Has Mitsubishi management been subverted by rank amatures, who lack the intellectual capacity to distill the spirit of their policy, and effectively differentiate it from the letter of their policy?
~ The implications are awesome, for Mitsubishi... That sports car enthusiasts have the longest, most comprehensive recollections, and the most stubborn, inherently manifest of sentiment, when it comes to their vehicles, EVO VIII policy will inevitably have the net effect that nobody is ever going to buy a high performance Mitsubishi, ever again. Mitsubishi's policy is inherently self-defeating. They have to know that.
~ I'm certain, somewhere in their organization, there has to be a few hard core guys, like us, whose hearts are crushed, that they've built such an awesome machine, but for ******* crony enterprise managers, in other departments, endeavoring to single-out and punish the very people who aspire to what they've painstakingly enginneered, for no good reason than doing the inevitable, having put the hammer down, on a vehicle specifically designed for hard driving?
~ We think Mitsubishi's expectations are unrealistic. Engineering a flagship, high performace Lancer, extending it to the edge of its performance envelope, so much so, it comprehensively rivals performance axiom of boutique, exotic vehicles, four times its price, but with the expecatation people who buy them will drive them like a Toyota Prius hybrid is altogether dilusional.
~ Is Mitsubishi so naive, they would assault Subaru's market, so assgessively, but with the thought that, merely having done so, enthusiasts should be compelled to buy themselves an Evolution VIII, but for no good reason than to park it in the garage, just to celebrate it?
~ No-no-no. That is not remotely indicative of what EVO VIII guys aspire to. The 22 year old girls-gone-wild market Mitsubishi panders to is not going to be remotely interested in owning an Evolution VIII. EVO VIII guys are going to buy that that car for one reason: to put it through its paces. They are going to extend, well beyond 300 horsepower. They are going to articulate every single nut and bolt which constitutes its essence. And, they're going to do that... for the next two decades.
~ That notwithstanding, not a-one of the aforementioned assumptions satisfactorily account for Mitsubishi's strange behavior (...we have our suspicions). Right or wrong, that what follows likely does, heed, or take your chances, otherwise:
ADVISORY: We suspect, back at the factory, perhaps EVO VIII test mules may have incurred time-induced wear on critical components. Something like that would certainly account for Mitsubishi's behavior (e.g., that Mitsubishi is particulatly interested in SCCA results, we suspect it's likely suspension related). Likelihood looms large there's somthing wrong with the EVO VIII, something that's probably going to cost them a lot of money to correct, under recall (henceforth, their effort to shake them out of the hands of original owners, as soon as possible, into the hands of younger, more vulnerable second-hand drivers is construed). We suspect, some mysterous prerogative accounts for Mitsubishi's motivation to aggressively, and creatively seek out any excuse they can possibly find for which to void, restrict, or limit EVO VIII warranties. So much so, that Mitsubishi is pulling out all the stops, trying to write off as many EVO VIII owners as "aggressive drivers," flakes, or SCCA drivers, and subsequently void warranties, on that basis. Expect any excuse to deny you warranty coverage. Whensoever possible, record any, and all conversations you have with regard to the servicing of your Evolution VIII at authorized Mitsubishi dealerships. Mothball your OEM tyres and wheels. Secure a second set of tyres and wheels for spirited driving, and a jack sufficient for swapping them, expediently, at a moment's notice. Do not put your OEM tyres hard, into turns ~
ADVISORY: Above all else, DO NOT RECORD YOUR REAL NAME WHEN PARTICIPATING IN ANY ACCUS/FIA SANCTIONED MOTORSPORT EVENT IN NORTH AMERICA (toggle here for more information, with regard to Mitsubishi's attempt to crosswalk their warranty database to ACCUS-FIA sanctioned events) ~
~ Mulholland Raceway Driver's Group hereby advises all Mitsubishi Evolution VIII drivers to mothball their OEM tyres, and wheels, saving them for when the time comes for factory service. Do not present your EVO VIII, even for routine maintenence, at an authorized Mitsubishi dealership, without your tyres in otherwise perfect, as delivered condition (...child safety seat, arrears, might be a nice touch) - MULHOLLAND RACEWAY.
We absolutly have the ability within this forum to protect ourselves. Id venture to guess that almost ever Evo owner, whether they are a member or just someone who browses the forums -knows about these forums. We have potentally all of Mitsu's customers & potential customers at our fingertips. We just need to organize them, make Mitsu take notice. Not just sit here and whine among our selves.
J8dailo - the only thing i'll give them credit on is the brake issue... the pad compound of these type of brakes produce a lot of dust, even under stop and go driving, and will make a squeel noise some bit of time... proper seating is a must, and will cut it down quite a bit, but it'll still be there... the rest is non-sense... and walnut = syncro ;p
at around 5k miles, my clutch feels like garbage... and all i've ever owned since turning 16 years old is standards, so it's not my driving style/ability... I've never even remotely came close to launching this car... I've never even thought about launching it out of fear of the clutch reading my mind and commiting suicide before i could even do it... LOL
in other words... count me in on signing... hehe...
All you USA EVO owners (including me) have absolutely no pull with Mitsu USA, much less Mitsu Japan. We got a great car called an EVO. Forget everything else. Forget your mfgr. warranty, or anything else you might expect from a big company you bought an expensive product from. Mitsu USA is going in the crapper, sooner rather than later.
Enjoy your EVO. It's an incredible car. Beyond that, you are on your own, and so am I.
From: Nor Cal 4 now!
question for someone: I have had two friends lose their clutch at 9k miles, im expecting mine to go at that point as well. From what I understand, the clutch isnt under the warranty so i have to pay the $1k out of pocket every 10k miles? And if I use a stronger clutch my warranty is voided? Doesnt sound good to me but if thats the deal id like to start saving my $$ now! thanks!
