the correct way to change gears

Going into second gear or any gears above 2nd are you suppose to make sure the cluth is completely released before you hit the gas?
BTW I just saw one of the best motoring videos on the MR and the way they launch that car is ny just redline the cars and drop the clutch

Bout the Best Motoring thing, yeh, they always do that. And look at the way they change the gears man...are the cars' clutches they test modified or somethin? I dun see how gears can be changed like that and launching like that without cripplin the clutch..( and the drivetrain )

You will likely get less wear on the clutch if you fully release the pedal prior to getting on the gas. To prevent grind, if you are getting grind, shift faster. I’m talking about moving the shifter faster.

Best wishes,

They are really hard on those cars in the Best Motoring Vids. On the Impreza Vs. Lancer vid, they have a race between the Evo 7 and Subaru Spec C. The guy driving the Evo 7 never lifted the gas between up shifts. At the moment that he hits the rev limit, he just would hold the gas down, push clutch in, upshift, and release clutch without lifting gas.

It's called power shifting. Your Evos, and regular lancers can handle it. You'll just ruin your clutch early. They don't care on best motoring because they are most likely factory demo vehicles that are given to magazines and automotive television shows for testing and review.

yeah... to not grind, you have to move the shift lever against the shift gate, put a little pressure on it and wait until it goes in by itself. Now release the clutch and put the gas.
If you force the shift, it WILL grind...just wait until the synchros do their jobs and your tranny will last you forever....I've yet to grind it my way, but my best friend (I let him drive once in a while) likes to force it...he's on his 2nd or 3rd tranny on his car.

sorry to steal the thread but, this is my first manual car and well i feel like the shifting seems kind of rough, going from 1st to 2nd i press the clutch and it seems kind of rough to get in, doesnt GRIND though, well i probably need more practice.but iam wondering if the gears are supposed to smoothly go in or do you have to give it some pressure??(sorry for the newbe question)

Untill the engine is at normal operating temps. it will always feel like it doesn't want to shift into 2nd gear. What you want to do is hold the revs a little longer before you shift. By that I mean shift at 4k. And pull the shifter to the left and back when shifting. After the engine warms up then you can shift at 3k without having that rough (binding) feeling.

ohh ok yeah i shift at around 2800 just to keep the gas milage pretty good, but i let my car warm up until 900rpm and then drive off. thanks for the info.
