Weight reduction?

What can be done to reduce the weight of the evo besides the obvious removal of seats, spare tire and floor mats. Who has the lightest evo 8, how much does it weigh, what have they done? After minor weight reduction how much does your evo weigh. Sorry for the long winded post.

rims, brakes,(rotating mass) suspension, light weight exhaust, drive on 1/4 - 1/2 tank of gas. Talk to Kurt Brown.

seats weigh next to nothing... You can't really expect it to make any sort of change.

Take the spare tire, carpeting, dash, center console, passenger seat, light weight forged rims, lighter doors, lighter windows, lighter trunk (CF), MR's aluminum roof, lighter side mirrors (CF), lighter tires, lighter hood (CF bare without fiberglass stucture), lighter exhaust, lighter engine components (manifold, o2 housing, radiator, radiator fan, intake, throttle body,), take the IC sprayer container out, smaller battery, lighter Strut bar, lighter suspension components, change all the bolts out with titanium bolts, lighter valve cover.

That's all I think of. Carpet inside weighs suprisingly a lot and the dash.

Heh, Diet is a good one.. But it depends on alot of things, dramatic losses in weight will come at a compromise.. But things like replacing the header and other components with stainless header, O2 housing etc.. running aluminum intercooler pipes instead of stainless..

Replace as many steel brackets and other components with Titanium (whether they have to be custom made or whatnot) Titanium strut bar, remove the power window regulators and inner structure in the rear doors, replace the rear door window glass with lexan or corning and mount them permenantly up instead of using window regulators.

The obvious stuff like losing the spare, tire jack, reduce unecessary fluids in the car, run as little gas as possible, remove the water from the washer/intercooler resevoirs, mini-battery (7-10 pounds as opposed to 30-40) Stainless Buschur exhaust, or a full titanium exhaust, composite or titanium driveshafts, titanium crossmembers and crossbar..

things like "Swiss-cheesing" non-structural panels, titanium front and rear bumper bars or removing them altogether, remove the airbags, lose the air conditioning system and compressor, heater and heater core, motor, wiper motor, radio, speakers, etc..

Here's your dillemma, what functionality are you willing to live without? Much of what I listed there can be done fairly easily, and should net you quite a bit of lost weight without a huge sacrifice in comfort (except the heater and wiper motor)

Seats don't weigh much, the inner structure of them is aluminum and you won't find much lighter seats unless you want to spend a fortune.

There's also other heavy components.. Another thought is using some new technology titanium springs and and lightweight coilovers..

Its all a matter of what you want to spend...

(BTW this is mostly stuff I'm in the process of trying)

Interesting thoughts in this thread. I've wanted to put my evo on a diet! Someone mentioned the MR's aluminum roof - how hard would it be to replace my 03 evo's roof with the MR's aluminum roof? No loss in structural rigidity? I dont know how the roof is connected to the frame of the car. Are there such things as lightweight doors (someone mentioned that as well...)

I would advise against trying to save weight by going with lighter brake rotors. Heavy rotors are actually a good thing. The more mass they have, the more heat they can shed. I know you could try going with a leightweight rotor or whatever, but the ones that are significantly lighter would be very cost ineffective, I think.

Just do this and you'll be set. This will show you how to reduce your wieght and make your car power to wieght ratio insane.
