I don't know where you got that #6500 from,( heard it was closer to 4000? ) but that is actually quite a large amount, especially for a first year run.

For comparison Toyota only sold 6900 of the MK lV Supra TT's from 93 thru 98. A large part due to lack of buyers ( over priced for the intended buyer and a shift in the market towards SUV's) but, just to bring that amount into perspective.

On the bright side maybe the same thing might happen to the Evo so dealers will have to wake up and realize very few people will be willing to pay $10K over MSRP.

And this is exactly where the arguements amount "limited production" have been failing up until now.

It's not just numbers produced but (and more importantly) demand. Right now it looks like demand will handily outstrip production on the EVO.

Dont forget the "old" Audi S4 tubo and the new V8 S4... if EVOs pricing goes upward of $40k, then the S4 and the EVO will suddenly find themselves sharing the same market!! Bahhh, thats freakin funny!

No freakin way I'd pay $40k for an EVO, absolutely no possible way, thats ridiculous... heck, even it's MSRP pricing of $30k is questionable for what you actually get for that price. Mitsubishi dealers need to understand that by gouging, they are shooting future sales in the foot. If I see this kind of pricing, I will loose ALL interest in the car, I will blame Mitsubishi for being the asses that they are and artificially limiting the numbers, and I will not look at their products for a very very long time... hell I'm almost to that point already and the car isn't even released yet, the salavating salesdorks and dealer attitudes already have me writing off the EVO as a possible car for me.

The plain old 2003 Subaru WRX for $23k out the door is looking more and more tempting to me. The SEVENTEEN GRAND price difference leaves alot of cash to drop into mods!! if I can come up with about twice that, I'll be buying a new Audi S4 and defintely NOT an overpriced Mitsubishi econocar with a $10k dealer "idiot" tax on it.

The truth hurts, dont it?

The demand for an Evo at 30k is pretty high but anything above that, the demand would be decreased tremendously.
The attractiveness of the Evo has always been the cost/performance of the car. Once the cost increases too much, then no one will want to buy it, just like the Supra, RX7 etc

Even at $33k (say a 3k markup), a WRX will cost $10k less than the Evo. Do you know how much performance I can get out of 10k? The US Evo is a bloated pig anyway. It's easy to increase power but not easy to reduce weight.

The Evo is nice but at the end, it's only a car and if dealers are going to markup, then there's the WRX with less power but weighs less too and a whole lot cheaper.

You guys just wait until the *****in yellow ricey EVO has it's starring appearance in that new "Fast & the Furious 2" movie, you think demand and pricing is bad now before the launch??!! How about 3 million little rich suburban ricer punks wanting the car, and their rich daddies buying it for them," damn the costs, it's the latest toy for my precious offspring"!!!

You know, I've wanted an EVO for a very long time now, and I was walking on clouds when I heard they were going to be imported finally last summer... however this upcoming "ricey'ness" of the Lancer/EVO is another reason I am shying away from rapidly from the car now... I DONT want the big ricey wing, I DONT want the eye sore colors, and I DONT want the big fart-can exaust and I'm really hesitant to buy a car that will soon get a huge rice image!

Suddenly, I like how the WRX can be ordered conservatively styled, no wing, decent colors, decent wheels (which can always be replaced too), and is $7k cheaper than the very very best deal you can possibly get on an EVO. The WRX's 16 gallon tank is also nice, why Mitsubishi chooses to put that pathetic peanut sized 13 gallon tank into a car thats going to be lucky to get 16mpg in the city is beyond me...

who gives a **** how big the freakin gas tank is? Are we too lazy to fill our cars up? I wish the gas tank was only 10 gallons so we could save some weight...

If you dont want to big ricey wing and the everything else, dont buy it. I, along with many others, probably think the vehicle looks up to date rather than anything. I am purchasing this car for the performance contained with it, not really for the looks. I wonder what people will think when they see a jaw-dropping FMIC danlging in front of them.

hahahaha duh, maybe you could refit your current WRX with one of these "ultralight" 13 gallon Lancer tanks... hahahaha

dude, you are not too bright, the weight difference of a 13 versus a 16 gallon tank is almost insgnicant, its the gasoline that weighs like 8 pounds a gallon... so just don't DONT FILL UP THOSE LAST 3 GALLONS and you'll be woopin up on the lancer with your ultralight Sube... logic, it ownz you ricers

Where did you guys find a 2003 WRX for 23,000? I got mine for 25,000 and that was with a VIP discount. Anyways, true the WRX is cheaper and you can dump mods into it and make it faster than an EVO. But you have to remember that the EVO is faster and more powerful to begin with hence the higher price. Just think how powerful the EVO will be after mods. Anyway I really don't mind paying 30,000 for it because I want a quick car without having to put mods. Once you put mods you start running into car problems, not to mention voiding warranties. I like the fact of beating somebody and saying that it is stock. Also I am sick of people complaining about the wing. It's too big, it's too ricey. Well that is one of the reasons that makes me choose the EVO over the WRX. The WRX is just too plain and not as aggressive as the EVO looks. To me the EVO stands out more and will draw more attention. I don't think 271hp is too ricey, do you? High aggressive wing, front mount intercooler, add to that my yellow color choice and I have one mean head turner. Just my thoughts Also remember the STi will be competing with the EVO. If I was a Subaru fan, I'd wait for that instead of buying the plain WRX. Higher starting level.

If I could get a base EVO, without the wing, and in a normal color, like silver, and at MSRP well then I will still consider buying one... I would prefer the Mitsu inline 4 and the overall shape of the Lancer is nicer to me too, and the Lancer "fits" me better inside since I'm tall...

But the local dealer has WRXs on sale for $23,000 and even Edmunds lists them at $23,300 true market value... thats a pretty good price for a pretty nice car, and mods are cheap for them, 40 horses is easy to find.

http://www.edmunds.com/new/2003/suba...5m/prices.html

granted these are "base" models, but thats what I'd want anyway.

Some of us aren't into head turning glitz and frill... I'm not out to impress other people with my toys, I buy them because I want to drive them, not because it will raise my status with the Saturday night ricer crowd.

In fact, I peel the "Z28" stickers off my Camaros, so they look like v6 cars to 95% of the teenagers out there... I dont want people knowing what I've got under the hood, people act like idiots if they think you have a hot rod and pull up beside you at a stop light. Yo kids, control your hormones and keep it on the track!!

Thats fine if some people are into showing off, charge them extra for all that glued on body kit stuff... and give us folks that ARENT interested in glitz and frill an option to get the car without it!!

When the WRX first came out, we were offered the car for $500 over invoice which is about $23k.
As the months went by, Subaru started offering rebates off the car and by the end of a model year, you could get one for probably below invoice.

The Evo is a good start if you want to mod your car but to go above 400hp, you need to change the internals as well, just like the Impreza.

Yea, some people dont like the big wing, yellow color and i dont either.

Besides, in the middle of the year, we can also buy the Impreza STi for about the same price and performance. In fact, it should be lighter than the US Evo8 which means better performance.
So, there really isnt a lack of performance cars.
