lol...

Just because I agree with what they are doing doesn't mean I have to be willing to pay the price... I'm willing to wait... To be honest I can't afford the Evo... and if alot more people in here were honest they would say the same thing. That why they are complaining... You don't hear those paying the "MSRP Plus" pricing complaining... so why should we? Don't want to pay the "plus" pricing? Then wait... it's pretty simple!

I'd just like to focus on this part of this quote... A few years back, when there were prowlers around, I was car shopping with one of my friends. We happened to stroll into a plymoth dealership and low and behold there is a prowler sitting there in all its glory. We check it out, sit in it, all the usual ****. I take a peek at the sticker... $45000 or so what ever the msrp was for that one, the dealer price for that car was $98000. Thats not a misstake I meant to type $98000. How about that for a markup....

There's a difference between paying more and gouging. They're not locking you into a contract and forcing you to pay it. You don't HAVE to buy at that price from that dealership.

And yes, I can sympathise with the business owner. That's pretty much what I was trying to get at. Try thinking about it a little more objectively. Pretend you're trying to sell some Evos.

Not to mention petitions are probably the weakest form of protest you can arrange.

Roll your eyes all you want, it doesn't change anything. The reason online petitions don't accomplish anything is that they are too easy. It takes all of 30 seconds to sign a petition on petitiononline. In other words, next to no time or effort. So if (and it's a big if) someone at MMSA saw that petition, they'd be given the impression that several dozen/hundred/thousand people took 30 seconds out of their busy lives to say they think it's wrong for MMSA and its affiliated dealers to make a profit. Perhaps the President of MMSA sees it - if he wasn't laughing by the end of it I'd be really surprised. On the flipside, if you wrote him a well-put letter (probably an hour to write, plus time and some minimal expense to mail it), he'd be more likely to believe that you were serious. Would he do anything as a result? I doubt it, but your chances would be better.

I'm going to pick on "Luca Ciccone" (sorry Luca). Luca wrote:
Of course not! Why would I buy a car for more than what it was worth?
This statement ironically points to exactly why this petition, online or on paper, would hold no weight whatsoever with MMSA: the definition of worth.

To the manufacturer (MMSA in this case, who is actually a reseller), the car is worth the invoice price and nothing more. This price covers their R&D, manufacturing, overhead, and profit costs. The MSRP value is what the manufacturer estimates the car to be worth to the target customer. It is only a suggestion/estimate, and it means nothing except as a starting point. The dealer's worth is the invoice cost, some portion of overhead costs, and whatever meager profit they can obtain from a sale. This leaves the consumer as the ultimate factor in determining worth - how much is he/she willing to pay to acquire it? I'm not willing to pay over MSRP (and depending what MSRP is, I might not be willing to pay that), nor are you. But someone else might value the car higher, and be willing to pay more. Worth is subjective. And that's is exactly the point I was trying to make (in a MUCH shorter form) - you can't control everyone's spending habits, and it only takes a couple people to "ruin" it for the rest of us.

And, for what little it is worth, I totally understand your motivation(s). While admirable, I just don't see it going anywhere. Good luck though

Couldn't agree more. I'm not in the market for a new car for another year or so. Just came here to get info on a car I'm interested in down the road. IMO a year from now there will be more cars to compete w/the evo so there will probably be no markups. I guess alot of peeps have run out on their paticence w/ this car because mitsu has teased us w/it for many years. So waiting for it to come down after the all the hypes is over with is out of the question I guess

The petition is useless....

Car manufacturer cannot really tell dealers what to do...
and even if they do.. there's always way to go around it...

The following is a rumor I've heard about Benz dealers and
the new SL55 (near 500hp version)..
Benz frown at dealer if they are trying to sell over msrp...
so dealers would find someone to sell the car to for msrp...
then sell the car at auction back to dealer in near new condition
(less than 1k on odo)... then sell it to its customer for $$$ over
msrp...
Last I've heard they are trying to sell SL55 for near 70k over
sticker... (heard from a friend of mine in used car business who
goes to auctions frequently)

An item is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. It's just the way it is.

No matter how many people sign this petition, each and every Evo WILL SELL. If a dealer tells you 5k over sticker, go to another dealer. If you still cannot find a dealer to sell it cheaper, guess what: someone is going to buy the car for whatever the dealer wants for it and you will not get one. Remember when people were paying $500, $600 or more for Playstation 2? This is the same thing. Believe me, all that Mitsu cares about is that these cars will be sold - period. And they will be sold, every last one. If you know what this car is all about and you MUST have it, you will pay whatever you have to in order to get one or you will not get one at all.

Some people seem to think (from posts in this thread) that if dealers don't charge over MSRP then they're poor businessmen. I would submit that if the MSRP that has chosen isn't enough to give them a big enough margin then THEY'RE the poor business people. MSRP is obviously what Mitsubishi thinks fair market value is. Now, of course dealers can charge over MSRP if they want to, but Mitsu isn't in the business of bankrupting their dealers. Then they wouldn't have anyone to distribute their cars.

We can only hope Mitsu brings enough evos over to counteract the temporarily inflated prices. Time will only tell.

Agree....
and also.. even if dealers do not charge over msrp... there will
always be someone to buy them (evos) at msrp from dealers
and then sell them out for more...

Ahh, a little positiveness in this thread...finally. I would think that most people would have been adult enough to have a similar attitude about the petition, and not instantly knock it out of the sky.

Afterall, in the off chance that it has any effect on how some dealers price the car, we could all benefit in the end....even the naysayers.

*A Jerry Springer like ending to a heated thread* hopefully...

No one's saying they're BAD business men if the don't charge more than MSRP. What I was saying, and what I believe other people were saying, was that there's nothing wrong with it. There's quite a difference. Mitsubishi and dealerships offer incentives that cut out their own profits YEAR ROUND on almost every model. Not that they don't make profits at all, but that they charge significantly under MSRP. Now one hot model comes and people jump down their throats for their making money on it. Cry me a river! Seriously though, try to be objective. Pretend you don't want the car. Or pretend you're selling it. It really helps to keep things in perspective.

I don't think anyone's arguing that they don't want theirs at a reasonable price, but villifying MMC and dealerships because they're trying to make money with their businesses (and will ultimately either do so or fail at their own consequence) seems silly to me.

Sorry, SC. Had to reply to that one.

Oh, and nobody take that crying thing to heart. I say that all the time.

Just for the record, I've always said it's understandable why the dealers will do this. Hey, that's capitalism and I'm a capitalist. But there are some dealers (car max, for example) who's business model dictates a no haggle, MSRP like price. That's capitalism, albeit a slightly different business model. But hey, let the dealers charge all they want, I'll just take my business elsewhere.

Great petition. Just signed it myself. Thnx for the effort, lets just hope it helps enough to keep the car well south of 35k.
