Need help with Oil Temp. Gauge install

This is the stewart warner oil temperature gauge I ordered

I basically plug that end into one of the two ports down by the oil filter correct and I should be good to go, or I can go with the greddy adapter that has 2 fittings on it for pressure/temp? Just wanted to make sure there's nothing else I needed to hook this up. One more thing, the line seems to be hard wired into the gauge, uhm, silly question, but can i run a new line incase the one thats on there isn't long enough?

Here's a quick shot of the new gauges temp mounted in the craigh hardy panel

It looks like you bought a mechanical oil temp gauge. These can be a pain to install, because the tubing from the sensor to gauge is not that flexible, cannot be cut, etc. Most people use an electrical gauge because then you only need to run a wire between the sensor and the gauge. My car has the factory gauges, and they replace the oil drain plug with the sensor.

ya it is a mechanical gauge, and i am kinda worried about the length of the cable..i have a feeling it's going to be to short myself...but lets say somehow it is long enough, i'd basically plug the end of the gauge into the slot next to the oil filter correct.

edit: Just found out the length of my cable is 6'..obviously not long enough, but, luckily they make a 12' one so I am going to return mine and get it switched out so the length will no longer be a concern.

I had a mechanical oil gauge in my eclipse and let me be the first to tell you it leaked all in my dash. It made a HUGE mess, i would never use one in my evo.

Depending on what size your sensor is you may need to get a bushing for the two plugs on the oil filter housing. They are 3/8 BSPT. I have been told they are 1/2, but they are not. Don't try NPT either the threads are not the same and you may get leaks. After trying to look for the right bushings with the right threads I gave up on the two bungs on the oil filter housing and am ordering the greddy oil filter adapter. I haven't heard of any problems with it and it is easier for me to do.

what exactly leaked in the dash? There is no oil running thru the line, its a temperature sensor on the end of the line...

I just ordered one as well..sounds like it'll make the job of installed the temp and pressure lines much easier.

Stewart Warner makes electric gauges that have full face sweep like mechanical gauges. One of my friends has them in his SE-R and bought them for that reason.

I suspect that crusin_lancer was talking about a mechanical pressure guage. In those cases you run a small plastic tube that carries the oil pressure to the back of the gauge. If you have one, you need to be really careful....because if the plastic tube hits a hot part of the motor...or chafes a hole where it comes through the firewall....you will be spraying oil out of the line. And the other problem is if the fitting leaks at the back of the gauge, you have oil drops in the cabin.

Have you looked at where you are going to thread the oil temp sender through the firewall? The problem is that you need a hole large enough to fit the probe end. There may be one, I have not looked.

ok, that makes a little more sense..and yes i've seen the hole in the firewall and it should be big enough to fit the probe end thru...I just mailed it back today so I can get the one with the 12' cable on it.

FYI - the spare plug on the oil filter flange is 3/8" BSPT. DO NOT screw NPT into BSPT. They are 1 thread per inch different and will ruin the threads on one of the parts, if not both.

That said, your fitting for the oil line is going to be 1/8" NPT. Check out the adaptor made by www.42draftdesigns.com. Specifically: http://www.42draftdesigns.com/product/42902.htm

They use a 3/8" BSPT plug to machine the adaptor. You may not need the 45° fitting, but it won't hurt.

I think it was VTECH8TR who was talking about the mechanical gauges. I have Defi gauges.
