Rain and after market intake?
Anyone out there in Evo land worry about sucking water in with after market intakes? A DSM 2gen buddy of mine just hydro-locked his engine with a K&N cone type filter. Just a little worried. I just finally reached pass the breakin period and I've got my HKS Super Mega Flow kit ready to install but all this rain in NorCal sux. Worried I might suck in water thru the heat exchanger area. Any thought??? I will post some pix of my 05 Electric Blue Evo. I love this color.
Maybe buy a heatshield for it, or one of those induction boxes that keeps your intake inside the box. You can also frabricate your own shielf if you wish.
Otherwise I havent heard any problems on this forum with their open air intake and rain.

IMO, youll have a higher risk to hydro-lock with the stock intake box than a aftermarket short-ram intake. With my apexi intake I drove through a crazy rain storm/flood and going through huge puddles and I went home and my filter was bone dry. With the stock box and the front snorkel its not to hard to suck up water in a big puddle and have it sit in your air box. Also, someone here already did hydrolock his car cause of the stock intake.
I did have that worry recently driving through heavy rain a couple of weeks ago. but no problems and intake was relatively dry after, . sol i dunno, does anyone have any personal experience hydrolocking evo???
I see your point about the stock air box. I have driven my car in hard pouring rain many times without a problem, but I guess what you said could be a concern. Tuners recommend the stock air box, but can be done to prevent hydro-lock with the stock box?

I drove through the monsoons and big puddles we are having with my K'N and was fine. I was a little worried but I guess the water gets broken up and evaporates before it hits the intake??

I have the Injen intake kit and it been raining pretty hard here. As long as the filter is not below the bumper, you shouldn't worry about water. Even if some small amount gets on the filter, some of it will turn to vapor once it hits the turbo, some will just coat the ic pipes and rest will be stuck in the intercooler.
