Just a quick question for you all. Are racing harness style seat belts for everyday use; street legal ? rice ? just was wondering everyone's thoughts let me know please
to my knowledge, 4-point and below harnesses are street legal. however, 5 point harnesses are required for track use. this is just what ive heard around, cannot be sure.
however, remember that if you are putting a harness system in your car, you really should get a roll cage for safety reasons- if you roll the car and the roof crumples, harness will hold you in place too tightly to avoid the crumple zone, and you can be easily crushed. with a regular seatbelt, you move around slightly when you roll so that you can avoid the crumple zones.

umm if you mean will it help the crumpling- no i don't think so, because it sits pretty low. maybe if sparco has special integrated protection bars in their harness bars?
however, if nothing else, make sure you get proper roll protection if you get harnesses. very bad idea not to.

I'd stick with the stock seatbelts. https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=119641
There's plenty of discussions around here about using a harness without a cage and if you do use a harness which kind to use.

This is good stuff -- I've been wondering a lot of the same things myself. If there are any knowledgeable people out there, keep the info coming.
I would like to get some 4-5 point harnesses, but am not willing to even spend the money unless I know it's safe. The most convincing / accurate info I've heard states that you need roll protection with something that holds you in the seat so snugly. With that in mind, are there any roll cage solutions out there that are reasonably priced AND allow you to keep your car in a practical, daily driver state? That means easy access to back seats too folks -- I have a four year old!

Cabo,
there are a number of threads that address your questions. but here are my thoughts anyway.
1, It is uncomfortable and awkward using a harness in daily driving. can't turn around to back up, can't turn the radio dial.(I have a seat, harness, and roll bar and use the stock belt when I am not on the track)
2, I would never put a kid in the back seat with a roll bar or harness bar, well maybe if I was just going up the street, but man, think about a t bone at the intersection and the kids head slaps that bar- ugly . I don't know about a full cage, you might have room with a well designed cage.
so my family car has evolved into a one passenger hauler

Wow, this is an interesting thread. I know the Evo has TERRIBLE crash ratings...like 2/5 stars driver side impact. I think the back side impact is a lot better than the front...good news for people with infants.
I would do a lot of reasearch...way beyond just this forum...before I put in a roll cage. Talk to some experts about it. roll cages are mostly for race cars that dont have crumple zones, air bags, interior head impact and knee impact zones, and everything else. Make sure youre not doing more dammage than good.

That's why I ask these questions. Even the worlds greatest engineer (which I am not) can miss important details ;-) No worries, the chances of me purchasing a roll cage or harnesses any time soon is VERY slim anyway...

I have LOTS of time to research, and NO money to spend on any of this stuff. I figure by the time I can afford something like a roll cage or good harnesses, I'll be well educated!
