took my 3rd brake light off... is it legal??
I just switched my small evo wing with the big cf I cut the wires off for the third brake light and now I have no third brake light. Is it legal. Should I keep it like this? How much is it to get an evo 3rd brake light installed? thanks!
glad to see you got it! hope it got to you ok.
i see no reason whatsoever why it would be illegal with the CF wing on (since there's no way for the cops to know that you ever had the 3rd light)...now if you put the small wing back on at anytime then i could see a cop pulling you over for the 3rd light being out. i don't know for a fact that it's illegal, but it's certainly possible...and maybe only in some states.

it may be illegal even with the CF wing on, but how would the cops ever know to ticket you for it since there's no way for them to know you're missing the light (unless they've memorized the evo's every detail)?
out of sight out of mind - they don't see an unlit light, they don't know the difference.

Why did you cut the wires for? You just increased the chances of others ramming into the back of you (and no, the small wing does not block the third brake light all of the time - get in a pickup or sports car and you can still see the third brake light)
When I had my small wing on, I hooked up the light on the wing as well (The EVO is already all wired up for it - just look for the plug in the trunk hatch) and so I had 2 middle brake lights.
The natural tendency of people is to stay further back and brake harder when they see more red lights so the more I can do to keep people off my back the better - especially that the EVO outbrakes many cars on the road by a good 10-20ft.
Anyway, I don't think it is illegal, but dumb anyway...

The Police aren't the problem. A third brake light is necessary to pass inspection in Mass. I would put it back before your next inspection. Also, if you get stopped for another reason, a cop could add that to the offenses if he notices.
Yeah, older cars don't have it, and although new cars are federally required to be equipped with it, there's circumstances where it wouldn't be visible and its not necessarily Illegal and likely won't get you a ticket. but I suspect as some have stated its a safety device, and therefore may be something to cause you to fail an inspection depending on your state and inspector (if they notice it or are required to check for it)
IF you have the ability to hook it up, I would recommend doing it.. But I wouldn't sweat a ticket because of it.

It's illegal. Also, I was thinking that you might be in some trouble if you were to get rear-ended. A person might be able to say "he didnt have a third brake light." Its centrally located for a reason, it stares the driver behind you right in the face. I dont think it looks all that bad, might want to consider putting it back on, just in case. Just my $.02.

Illegal. Same problem happens with some mid 80's 911s. Porsche put the light on the tails on some models, in windows on others.
Get a light for the rear window-you'll be covered no matter which tail you use
