I'm using 6.75's. Ordered them from Crutchfield since no local shops carried the proper fit. I would strongly recommend using a nut and bolt to fasten the speakers since the supplied sheetmetal screws are terrible and will rattle loose in a matter of weeks.
I might add that the install of the HU and speakers in my RS was hands down the easiest install I've ever done in a car. About 1hr for the head unit and 4 speakers.

I used 6.5's and the speakers out of a GSR. Cut the stock speakers out of the plastic surrounding frame they are mounted in and you can use a dremel to grind the plastic frame smoothe. It will screw right into place on the door frame ond you can mount the 6.5's in the space the stock speakers used to fit into. The plastic frame deal will act as a spacer and a good mount for aftermarket 6.5's. I used Infinity 6000cs setup. Also, this is assuming you can get the stock GSR speakers off someone or can get some other equally good spacer. As far as the back tho, I never tried. I took them out completely and just placed a subwoofer box in the trunk. I was worried the subs would blow the rear speaker because they have no enclosure protecting them from the trunk space. I always intended to make some sort of mount for rear speakers down the line but I wrecked and never did it. good luck with yer install

I am right there with you tweakdsm, I use my 04 RS for daily work. So I needed some music to pass the time and the AM/FM diskman with seat mounted headphones (Miata style) was not cutting it. The Lancer has speaker openings in the sheet metal that can fit a 6.75 in speaker in the front doors and on the rear shelf. I think stock size is 6.5 but with a lot of molded plastic around them to fill the opening and match the sheet metal bolt pattern. And the problem is really that the bolt pattern is rare. Thus you require an adaptor to direct mount any speaker (no drilling required). So back in August when I bought my stuff only the Alpine 170's and Infinity 652.5 speakers were direct fit with adaptors in the manufacturers box to the Lancer bolt pattern. There may be more available, now that the lancer has some popularity.
I bought some Alpine 170's for the front doors and used some Pioneers I had in my old car on the rear deck. I made my own adaptor plate out of balsa plywood. It buzzes sometimes but I figure it is an RS. It is supposed to buzz, rattle, squeek, roar, rummble, and otherwise sound mean.
Also I recommend mounting the radio in the lower hole. There was too much sun induced glare on my Alpine 9827. Which BTW I don't recommend, you can't dim the button back lighting and display enough at night.
Oh yeah if you want to be able to dim any of the aftermarket radios you need to wire in your own dimmer knob. The Lancer instrument panel dimmer does not affect/control the radio. I didn't because I found out that the buttons won't dim on the 9827 Alpine. I suffer through it.

Oh yeah, definitely mount in the lower position (below the HVAC controls), if you have the time. It's much easier to reach when one hand is on the shifter as well as more out of sight when the car is parked. Thirdly, it frees up the upper DIN for gauges.

I have 6.5" Infinitis Kappas in the back and 6.5" JBL Audios in the front. I was also able to use the stock speaker grills to keep that stock look. The box your speakers come in will have spacers so the 6.5" fit perfectly.
Use the search function or check under Show and Shine for speakers that directly fit. I made spacers for all four when I replaced the system in my 03. Some speakers fit without them (Infinity). Also watch out for the depth of the front door speakers, anything more then 2.5" deep without spacers will hit the window.
