Question NON AYC DIFF vs AYC DIFF.....

Hi,

What is better.....(performance, wear and tear, handling) on evo's rear differential? LSD diff or the hydraulically controlled Diff (AYC)?

most will say it is hardly noticable unless you push the car to the extreme limits on the track. which alot of people can't even do. oh and eayc is on '05 MR and it's the center diff. the front also has a helical lsd on all '05's i believe.

AYC is not on any USDM EVO.

well, I dont have an USDM EVO8 but I do have an JDM EVO7engine and tranny with ACD LSD.
to make things short, I'am doing an EVO VI conversion on the mirage.
I have all the parts except the rear diff assembly. I know the AYC system is the
most complicated on EVO, that whats evo makes differents.
If somebody know more about it, let me know...
your info will help me on my project.

Well if you are doing a Mirage to Evo conversion you obviously have money so I say go for it. Your Mirage will drive nowhere near a close to a true E6 or any other Evo for that matter so you will need all the help you can get.

Strength and reliability wise the RS diff is better.

There's a reason why the rally cars use the RS diff instead of the AYC diff.

Plus if you are going to go through all the trouble of a swap just use the RS diff, its a lot less hassle as you don't have to worry about all the sensors and hydraulic equipment needed to run it.

Plus there are plenty of people who take out their AYC diffs for RS diffs and have said that the car feels nicer to drive at the limit.

ACD is not in the rear diff. It's in the center dif.

USA Evos have had ACD and RS rear diffs (Non-AYC) from 2005-2009

You arent going to find a whole bunch of info on the AYC/ACD pumps here since we didnt get them till the X. I know @bee-raddd has recently gone through trying to get a regular mechanical LSD in the rear and keep the ACD. Maybe he can speak to whats worked or not worked.

Hey Htooent wai.

Hopefully i dont confuse you with this. If you dont understand anything say so and i will try to explain different.

This system is quite complicated for us.

ACD is in the transfer case up front.
AYC is in the rear diff.

The AYC pump supplies the oil and pressure for both the ACD and AYC. If your pump has failed neither will be working and all your diffs will be acting like open diffs.

So if you replace your rear diff with an LSD unit and remove the pump your ACD will stay open all the time and be horrible.

The cheapest and easiest option is either rebuild the pump or get a new/ second hand pump.

Otherwise you would need to get a viscous coupling transfer case like the usdm version has and ditch the ACD transfer then source an RS rear diff axles and mounts and driveshaft and then you can remove ur pump.

You can keep the ayc rear diff and remove the ayc and put in an lsd but it doesnt work very well. I tried this and it broke pretty quickly.

You can buy rebuild kits for the pumps if its just the pump thats failed.
