Note: Not for street cars

The Anti Lag System, also known as ALS or "bang bang system" due to the sound it makes, are primarily used to decrease lag in a turbo-charged car. It is used primarily for professional race cars due to the large lag time cause by the large turbo it is equipped (race cars need bigger turbos for more boost and engine output). Here's how it works...

How ALB Works
When a driver lifts off the gas pedal, the ignition timing is altered by quite a bit (higher retardation) and the air/fuel mixture is made richer. Also, the inlet butterfly is kept slightly opened or an air injector is used to continue to feed air into the engine. This results in air and fuel to continue to be fed into the engine slightly even when the driver is no longer stepping on the gas pedal.

With the ignition being delayed/retarded, the air/fuel mixture reaches the exhaust tubing mostly unburned (lots of fuel is wasted because of this). When the spark plugs ignite, the exhaust valve just starts to open, again due to the retarded ignition timing. Because the exhaust temperature is so high, the unburned air/fuel mixture literally ignites. Simply put, there is a literal explosion that occurs in the car's exhaust system. The result, the explosion runs into the turbo and keeps it moving, again, even when the driver isn't stepping on the gas.

Pros and Cons
Pros:
1. Incredibly decreases turbo lag time, resulting in much better response time

2. Cool visual and sound effects coming out of the exhaust pipe (flames spew out of the muffler with a "bang bang" noise)

Cons:
1. The stress from the explosion in the exhaust system would destroy the exhaust manifold, exhaust piping, and turbo completely in roughly 30-70 miles; very costly system.

2. Reduced engine braking (this can be a "pro" depending on race conditions and driver needs)

Additional Notes/Tips
  • A driver/race team can set the ALS to either a mild or aggressive setting depending on course needs. An aggressive setting, for example, would keep a constant approx. 18~ PSI of boost in the inlet manifold.
  • As mentioned before, the ALS is also known as the "bang bang" system from the sounds of the explosion coming out of the exhaust pipe.
  • Unless you have too much money (about $5000 every 100 miles or so), an ALS in your street car is pointless and unnecessary. DO NOT PUT IT IN YOUR STREET CAR FOR THE VISUAL AND SOUND EFFECTS. This would be the ultimate and mostly costly "ricer" mistake.
  • A good alternative to producing the effect of ALB is simply left-foot braking techniques. You can also anticipate how your turbo reacts in terms of timing if you practice a course well enough so you can accel and brake accordingly.
  • Some events are slowly prohibiting the ALS due to the noise level it makes.
  • From what I found out, there are new methods of reducing the turbo lag effect without the costs of an ALB system.

Are you sure you would blow apart a stainless steel exhaust in 30-70 miles? I guess I've heard of less aggressive systems that could be turned on for road racing. Hell that's like a single 30 min session at Watkins Glen before you would have a ruined exhaust?

I think every street racing drag ricer needs anti-lag
