Lifter – My evo developed lifter tap shortly after I bought it. It’s pretty damn annoying to hear a 30K car knocking at idle………go to autozone, invest in a little mystery oil (Thanks Gil), and do an Italian tune-up (thanks 4g63>0000) (disclaimer: don’t do this on public roads hehe!)

Can someone tell me more about this lifter sound? Im starting to hear faint ticking sounds around the engine bay....

If you open your hood and start your car, you will hear a tapping noise that sounds like it is counting every couple seconds. It isn't very suddle either, you will hear it clearly.

^ I do hear it very clearly. I want to know what I need to do in order to fix this problem. Thinking about taking into the dealership but I'm pretty modded so they won't be too pleased about that.

You have to take the cluster out and expose the red bulbs. The bulbs have "condoms" slipped over them. You can take them off. This will increase the brightness by 30-50%! Becareful, if you dont do it right you may accidentally break the bulbs. I broke one of mine. While you have the cluster out, you may as well replace all of them, since they will eventually burn out.

I don't do any track driving.
That depends on where you live and how tough you are on your vehicle. My struts only lasted about 60K.

My Evo has 400 miles on it and I hear more tapping under load around 3500rpm and up. I noticed the sound when I was driving home from the dealership. Sounds like my old MG when it needed a valve adjustment. Maybe my car needs to break in a little more. Would guys try mystery oil in a 400 mile Evo?

Valuable info, esp for the rookie Evo owner, such as myself

More people should write up reviews like this when they reach certain milestones
