Yeah, I know of atleast 5 other guys who have done this. I was actually stuck 2 states away when it happened. Lesson learned: never work on your car if you arent near home.
great write up! did you go by the book or maintance changes (timing belt, oil, tranny, diff, fluid changes) and at how many miles did u change your spark plugs an did u change your plugs with this?!

According to some, a real italian tune up is driving at redline in your highest gear for prolonged periods at a time. since I didnt want to get thrown in jail or kill anyone, I went WOT and held redline for 10 sec in gears 1, 2, and 3. then i would tool around a bit (letting the turbo cool off)and repeat the process. I did this 3-5 times in a row. Ever since then, my lifter tap has gone away. Remember to used that mystery oil too! btw, this works for gummer lifters, I am not sure what would happen if your lifter/lifters failed! So do this at your own risk.

Put the car in neutral and rev the engine 10-30 times at the specified intervals, which amounts to:
1.) roll-on throttle to 3000rpm over 15 second period (ie. slowly build rpms to 3K)
2.) then sidestep the gas and let idle for 15 seconds
3.) rinse and repeat until "tap" is gone
I had to do this after my HKS 272 cams were installed. The ticking was pretty bad, and this got rid of about 80% of the noise.

Did you put in the mystery oil before doing this?
BTW what's the part number or name of the mystery oil ???

Well, I didnt go exactly by the book, but in general yes. I believe that I changed the plugs the first time at 35K, then again at 70K. I highly recommend changing the tranny/diff oil every 25K depending on what you have in there. I currently have copper ngk's in there but I am thinking of going with another kind as the copper's wont last long (longevity is a big factor for me, more so than performance) since I change my oil like every 1.5-2 months due to the amount of driving that I do.

Nice write-up, Bobby. I just have one comment:
I would suggest that maybe one reason you haven't had any transfer case issues is because you flush the fluids regularly. I would add that you must MAKE CERTAIN that the dealer uses the CORRECT gear lube! I had not one, but TWO transfer cases fail (both replaced under warranty) because the dealer used generic GL-4 gear lube instead of the proper Mitsubishi DiaQueen GL-5 LSD Gear Lube that Mitsu recommends.
I flush my t-case lube with every second oil change (i.e., every 6K miles) and change the tranny and rear diff fluids with every 5th oil change (i.e., every 15K miles). People who follow this routine seem to have no drivetrain issues what-so-ever.

16) Transfer case – I’ve had no problem with it so far (knock on wood). I believe that design defects and driver abuse are the main causes for all of the failures you hear on the boards.

One question:
My service manual says to change the Timing Belt at 50,000? Is that necessary? I think it does mention that you can wait and do it at 105,000. However, I don't want to give Mitsu an excuse to void my warranty because I didn't do proper maintenance.
Btw, nice post on the stuff to look for.
