I think it really depends on what you want to do with the car, and your own interest. There is no real way to blanket statement either way.

Me personally, I have a Supra, and an AWD Mitsubishi. They each have their ups and downs. Mod for mod its tough to beat a Supra in terms of HP. Many Supra owners don't take the time/effort to put put a good tire on and get a good ET...but its easily do able.... and thus gives the Supra "13sec" jokes. The cars will make upwards of 450whp easily on stock turbos (highest so far is 500rwhp) with just intake, exhaust, fmic, and boost. My own car makes 430 and traps ~ 119mph with NO fuel control AT ALL....no AFC, no AEM, nothing. Just pure stock ECU.

The RWD is a hinderence on normal street tires from very low speeds. EVOs will be able to cut 1.6 60fts all day long on regular radials thanks to AWD, and thats something you WILL NOT be able to do on a Supra without a drag radial. A supra with crappy tires is not very fun to drive. But with a good street tire, you can easily get good traction, just not from a dead stop without some drag tires.

EVOs are impressive cars, but somewhat limited by 2.0Ls, needing to run quite a bit of boost to make power. This is not a slam, my other car is a 2.0L Mitsu which I have been racing for 6 yrs. I know a bit about both, just thought I would offer my unbiased opinion.

Just to throw some more gas on the fire. I think the Supra gets a bad rap on its handling. Heres an older road&track test. Supra pulled some good G's in stock form.

Supra = import (street ) king period. If you want crazy power get a supra. If you want a car that is fun to drive, can make decent power, and can handle very well get an evo.

It all depends on what you want, if you want a project car, get something used, like a supra, RX-7, 300ZX, older corvette, possibly a camaro (I know its a hick car but hey its still cool), basically something used that you can pick parts up for cheap if you accidently screw something up. The satisfaction of turning a junker car into a magazine worthy ride would definitely be a great experience. On the other hand, if you want a new car (nothing quite beats the feeling of knowing that you are the first one to drive the car) the evo would be the best choice. If you live in a snowy/cold climate, also consider the possiblity of buying two cars, a junker for winter and a project car to drive around in the summer.
