New Shortblock, opt for comple engine?

Hey, just wanted to get some ideas and recommendations from you guys..

I took my car to service last saturday, it was givin this noise which is suspected was rod knock.. turns out it was. the guys checked it out, and said that it was a manufacturers defect, that there was a spun bearing ( i think something wrong with lifter #1) anyway, they ordered a new shortblock.

My car's at 2800 miles. They said nothing else in the engine was damaged (the top engine portion or the turbo).

What i was wondering is:

1. Should i try harder and get a complete new engine? its low mileage and its wierd for a problem for such a new car

2. Is it easy to install a shortblock? i mean im just worried about the installation process the mechanic is going to go through...

3. Would it be easier to install a complete engine?

4. Any other ideas thoughts on that? thanks alot...

If nothing else is broken just get the new shortblock ... it just depends on, if the mechanic has the necessary experience building a new engine ...

If its just a short block, they have to pull the heads, in which case it may not be a bad idea to throw in a heavy duty timing belt, they have to put the old one back on anyways. Upgrade your head studs with arp at the same time.

Easiest things to do and they will add reliability to the car.

Thats pretty much what im afraid of, i talked to the mechanic, he said he's worked on Evo's before, and installed blocks on cars before, but never installed a shortblock on an Evo. When i asked him how hard it would be he said, he said "whoah, i'ts very hard" i mean his response scaried me a LOT.

Anyways, they ordered the block last saturday so its gonna be installed... im just scared about how good the installation would be..

if i install the timing belt and heads, would they void me of warranty?

Don't think Mitsu will provide complete new engine. I'll bet they just repair/rebuild it.

Is it at a mitsu dealer? To replace the whole bottom end, the block doesnt even have to come out. If they send a new shortblock, they have to reuse everything, else. Just buy the upgraded belt and bolts and have the tech install them instead, they need to be put on regardless, stock peices or upgraded.

If its being done at a Mitsu dealer so I dont see a prob with the voiding of a warranty, but I would talk to them and ask first.

i am not even a mechanic, and i am swaping out my shortblock right now. the one i bought just came with the crank and pistons, so i had to swap out many things from my older motor. i think motor work is easy on these cars, ofcourse compared to other engines, but a lot of small things can screw it up BIG!

if the shortblock that he got already came with pistons and crank installed, then u have just eliminated half of the probable problems. other problems can come with the oil pump, head gasket and timing belt installation.

and ya, is this a mitsu dealer? is it being replaced at no cost to you?

Yeah, its a mitsu dealer... its Harold Zeigler so it owns, BMW, Chrysler, and etc..they' share the same service building..

I'm getting it at no cost (under warranty) because it turned out to be a manufacturers defect.. which is suprising with mitsu and their engines..

I dont know how they ship the shortblock, but they cant reuse the pistons i believe because wouldn rod knock and problem with the lifters pretty much screw them up badly too?

just a brief question.. whats in the shortblock? (cranks, belt, rods, pistons) and whats on the top portion? just to clarify some stuff...

Thanks...

its gonna be alright. i know the tech that's probably fixing your car. is his name doug? if so, he's about the best tech you'll be able to find. i'm sure that isn't very reassuring, so PM me if you want to.

lifters have nothing to do with the shortblock, they are in the head. if u got a spun bearing, that means your crank went bad, usually from scoring. scoring is mostly caused by a lack of oil, or incorrect crank machining.
it doesn't mean if the crank is bad, that the pistons/rods are. a shortblock from mitsu includes only the crank, rods and pistons assembled. no belts or pumps are included.
