Boost Gauge vs. Dimmer wires
Boost Gauge vs. Dimmer wires
..been through the search, read about 45 threads that didnt answer my question so I'll slap it up here..
Wired up a Defi Boost gauge this weekend and tapped the wires into the dimmer switch.. There are three wires feeding the dimmer switch, Black, Green and Brown. For shtis and grins I tapped my ground into the black wire (yea yea I know, should use another ground) and the other wire to the brown, since I was feeling lucky. Now, the boost gauge & HVAC background lighting dims directly opposite of the Dash. Kind of neat since I can dim the dash and have the boost gauge all lit up (sticks out nicely) and vice versa for just cruising.. BUT, I should probably make it work right..
Anyway, I've read in some other threads that if you tap the green wire of the dimmer switch, the gauge will have power but not be dim-able? Who has a boost gauge wired into the dimmer, and what wires did you go with? (no HIDs for me as a sidenote, if that matters)..

hmmm.. never tried the dimmer switch wires. After all the bs I went through trying to figure out which wires to use for my Defi Control Unit and BF boost gauge, per friends' suggestions, I went and tapped into the stereo harness wires. So much more easier. And since the harness had labels... it helped ALOT!
But on my old mechanical Blitz gauge, I just tapped into one of the power wires near the fuse box area and grounded to a bolt behind the kick panel. The gauge didn't have a dimmer just on and off with the parking lights.

...well so far we know:
Brown (power) + Black (ground) = Reverse dimable (this also effects the radio and heating/AC lighting)
Green (power) + Black (ground) = Has power, but no dimming.
there must be someone who has a properly dimming boost gauge, you wouldnt think it would be that difficult..

Here is the trick, I am almost 100% that brown is power and then you tap the black for ground. It may be diff colors on your car since I have a 05 but if you tap the center one of the three for ground and the right one for power (its the wire thats not green).

There are three wires that go to the dimmer switch. two have power and one is a ground. you need to tap the two wires for the boost gauge light into the the two power wires. you will either get it right on the first try or notice that your gauge dims in reverse of the dash lights. if it dims in reverse just switch the wires. if you still have trouble i'll go look at my 03 later and get you the exact colors. this is only for the light. if you need a ground for the gauge (egt or something else) use a chassis ground. only the lights for the gauges should be hooked up in this manner.
so,
Black Defi wire -> brown (power) dimmer wire
white Defi wire -> green (power) dimmer wire
nothing -> black dimmer wire
(or vice versa on the black/white wires)
I'll give that a shot

Boy is this a confusing subject!! So, has anybody SUCCESSFULLY got their guage to dim yet?? Which wires did you use?
Choices: Dimmer Wires are: (1) Black (2) Brown/Yellow (3) Green/White
Please post your results. Thanx!

I hooked up my Defi Boost guage this weekend. Wired the Defi leads to the green/white and yellow/brown EVO dimmer wires. The guage dims with the dash lights. Cool!
