sti vs. evo

The STi has 3.91 gears, while the Evo's are in the 4.xx range, if I'm not mistaken. The STi would probably have the higher top speed of the two, due to the 1-gear advantage, but again, that advantage is thrown out the door with the MR.

What's really excites me about the STi and the Evo is how evenly of of a toss-up it is between the two. I've weighed out the pros and cons of each car countless times, and while they both have their faults, they're just too close for me to make a decision on which is the better performing car of the duo. They're priced nearly the same (save for the MR), have the same basic DNA, and are nearly identical in all aspects of performance. The STi makes up for its disadvantage in handling with acceleration, while the Evo makes up for its slight disadvantage in acceleration with handling. Pick your poison.
See, at least with a Camaro Vs. Mustang, they're a little bit more "distanced" from eachother, so I'm able to make a clear decision between those two. The Camaro's faster handles better, while Mustang has slightly better refinement, and a more comfortable ride, etc. While the basic ideas behind the Camaro and the Mustang are the same, they're totally different cars that have taken totally different directions at achieving the same goal.
i rarely see a subie be competitive with the evo's at the track here, most of the time the sti's i've seen at the track don't break 14.00,,,(driver) still, all the evo's in the area seem to dominate the subies around here

first, it came down to ease of modding. the Evo is pretty much tried and true given it's heritage. and i haven't seen huge numbers being posted by STis. no disrespect, i just haven't. plus i like the iron block in the Evo vs. aluminum in the STi.
secondly, both cars will be mildly expensive to maintain, so i asked myself which one i would 'want' to take care of. the Evo won in my mind again. add to that maintainence will be easier to do: spark plug changes, engine layout is straighforward, engine bay is eay to move around in/work with, etc.
third, i like the fact Mitsu offers the RS package for those of us who don't want all the 'frills' and extra crap
so just some more food for thought. of course, i AM jealous of the displacement the subrau gets. i'd love a 2.5l Evo, heh

I've never seen an STi "dominated" on a track, or vice-versa.

Prior to buying, I didn't do much research on the costs of modding either the STi or the Evo, so imagine my surprise when I found out what a pain it is to mod the STi. It's not hard to make great power in the STi, but damned if it isn't expensive!
One of my main reasons for purchasing the STi over the Evo is because I'm much more confident in Subaru's overall reliability. I've read over a few different sources, and found that Subarus had pretty good reliability ratings. According to one source, Consumer Reports, EVERY Subaru vehicle in their lineup was "recommended," INCLUDING the WRX and STi. That was a huge factor for me.
Another main reason for my choosing of the STi, aside from just liking it since its introduction, is because of Mitsubishi's ailing financial status, and spotty reliability record. I figured that with a company in poor financial status, it would be a real hassle to get warranty work performed if something were to go wrong. From what it sounds like from some of the posts I've read here, I was right in my thinking. I'm reading a lot of posts about people trying to get warranty work covered, and Mitsubishi doing everything they can NOT to honor coverage. Also, in all honesty, I've read a lot more posts on this site about problems with their Evos than what I've read on the Subaru sites about STis. Maybe it's because of the level of mods, or maybe not.
If things were different with Mitsubishi's financial status and reputation for reliability, my decision would've been even tougher to make.

Well, I'll give you my perspective since I have owned both...
Evo - I loved the way it handled. It made me feel like a better driver than I actually was. Transmission is weak (although I can't really know how the 04-05s are). I broke my tc after about 14K and a clutch change. Evos are easier and cheaper to modify as far as getting more power goes. The 4g63 has TONS of potential. Advans are much better than Potenzas.
Sti - Its a car that only a mother could love (as far as styling is concerned). With just a TBE and E-Management system I was able to put down 310wtq and 296whp. However, if you are looking for more power, you need a new turbo, FMIC, injectors, fuel pump, and a professional tune = $$$. You can fix the handling characteristics with a set of good coilovers, and f&r large swaybars... Also, I don't know why people say that they see more Stis but there are faaaaaar less USDM Stis that were built than USDM Evos...
Soooo, why did I switch to an Sti? Because I already had the Evo and wanted a change. I also love the Sti's WRC heritage. As soon as the Evo X is out I am back baby!
