Adding to the point above, whats the point in having a 30000$ car if you don't know how to use it? Do you have track experience? No, do you have autocross experience? No, do you have any performance driving experience period? No, so why get a performance car. A performance car is for a performance driver, something that only comes with age.

 

I'm sorry, but no kid deserves a car, they only get one because it can be deemed a "necessity". I always thought it was funny when people said things like "well I got good grades so I deserve a car". No, it doesn't work like that, you get good grades because it helps you, not your parents, not your friends, just you. The job of a student is to get good grades so they can get into university and stop being a parasite. Nobody deserves a reward for doing their job. And to take a break from trying to explain to you why you aren't thinking very well, I will clear up your questions about VTEC, RS, MR, IX

The EVO came to the US in 2003. The models from 2003-2005 were called EVO VIII (Thats 8 in roman numerals)

Of the EVO 8s there were the base model, the RS, and the MR. I think one year might have had GSR but I dont know much about that.

The base model was...well...the base model. The RS was like the base model except it was stripped down a little to save weight. It doesnt come with a radio, spoiler, it has aluminum roof and hood, and a few other things to save weight.

The MR is the premium model, it came out in 2005. Its still an EVO VIII, its just called the EVO VIII MR edition. It comes with a 6 speed, bilstein suspenion, aluminum hood and roof like the RS, and a 10.5 hotside on the turbocharger which makes it a little faster.

2006 starts the next version of the EVO. It is called the EVO IX (Thats 9 in roman numerals. 9 comes after 8. Get it?) The main new feature of the EVO IX is the MiVEC. I think thats what its called. VTEC is on hondas. Honda developed it first. MiVEC is what mitsubishi named their version of the system.

 

Some evo's can turn into hoopties. I am hopefully making the trade for the 9 this week hopefully.

Well you answered you own question. The dude who is 16 has a much greater chance to get into an accident and crash his car when compared to the dude who is 30. The STi, 350z, evo9 are all scary fast machines stock to a new-driver and I feel that it would be in his best interest to start off with something a bit slower. I would suggest getting an 05 wrx and doing some mods here and there.

The evo is a great car and I honestly believe that if a driver is mature, responsible, takes a high-performance driving course and has the will-power to not show off his "whip" in front of his friends than he most probably won't crash it, however the original poster does not seem to have this attitude.

Wait are we talking about him getting mods for his car? Nobody in their right mind can justify this. Most of us on here can't push a stock EVO to its full potential, much less this 16 year old kid. Theres no point trying to make it faster when its too fast already. I'll say what I said before. Yeah, its possible for him to drive an EVO without wrecking it. He needs to learn how to drive a stick on a different car first, and take drivers ed at least, and try to get experience with parents before he gets and EVO. Then he can get the evo as long as he is very careful and follows all traffic laws, and has to have some natural ability for driving. But again, what do you need an evo for if you're going to drive like that?

 

see i dont know anything about him and im not judging im just saying that if i was in his situation i would get the evo.......i have taken driving courses....and i do know how to control a car....i have been around cars all my life and will cont. to be around them....i cant wait to go to uti and become a ASE tech........i think if he has the chance to get an evo he should because he only has sooo much time before the x comes out and ruins the evo! lol jk but seriously!

 

We know his age, we know he can't drive stick, and we know he doesn't have a full understanding of what the evo actually is (as evident by the VTEC questions).
