i'm 19, I've had an evo for a year and a half now.... We can't just ASSUME that this guy is going to be irresponsible with an evo. As a daily driver.... the Evo is both reliable and fun. As long as this guy is disciplined enough to not do stupid **** like canyon racing or high way running in heavy traffic... he'll be fine. BTW the evo was my first manual car as well, and I wouldn't consider myself a good driver by any means but i'm more than capable of "handling" an evo. It's not hard to go to your local speed way and sign up for a couple of lessons for 100 bucks. And by this i don't mean how to properly launch or how to heel toe down a canyon, but the basic things as downshifting to proper speeds, and shifting "nice." Stop hating on this guy... we all wish we had an evo when approaching 16...especially when his family is financially sound enough to afford it. BtW... Go with the evo.....I just traded cars with my friends 350Z for the weekend and I demanded a trade back before saturday was over. The damn thing is slow... I don't care how much horsepower it has at the crank. As for the 2006 Sti... that things just ugly imho.

Jus wondering.... how did you pay for an evo with "your own money" when you were 16. Sell narcotics? win a lottery ticket? or just use the money your parents gave you as your "own money?" Not trying to flame you but i have a hard time believing you earned the money from an actual job. Must've been working since you were 9. Correct me if i'm wrong.

Even If I had the money, I would NOT buy an Evo for a first car.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sensible with cars etc. And it'll only go as fast as you drive it, however, there will always be a moment where you'll be tempted to do something stupid. Be it to prove something to yourself or to your audience (passengers, hot pedestrian chicks).

Not only that, but if you're inexperienced, the last thing you want to do is pay out for a new front bumper or something after you failed to stop in time, or had difficulty parking. It just isn't worth it man!

Then there's the maintenance and running costs of an Evo. Even with your own job, at 16 you'll most likely be struggling to maintain it. Not to mention things like insurance, petrol. You'll end up regretting it.

Buy something cheaper. It doesn't necessarily have to be a POS. Just buy something 'decent' and drive it a round for a few months. It may seem hard to understand, but if you went by that plan and left the evo out for a while, you'd be glad you did in the long run.

That will be the 'normal' running costs + new exhausts, brake pads, bov, cams, EMS, coilovers, clutch, manifolds....

Man when i was 16 i had no business in ANY car with a little horsepower, not that i do now but you can get yourself killed real quick in cars like these. I'd recomend a corrolla for your first car.

Well. i have taken all ur advice in mind. i haven't made my decision just yet. i still have time and alot more to learn.

But just to add. i know many specualte that young people like me are immauture and do stupid stuff like speed though traffic. and i just want to tell you that i am not that kind. putting in play that my dad taught me how to drive. i will never try to do something stupid. let alone something to my car. the one thing i hate the most is losing my dad's trust. as you can see i am really really respectfull and always thinking of what my dad will say if i do something. i am not saying i am a perfect child. but i will leave the reckless driving out of my life for awhile.

maybe anand understands. indian parents are sometimes very strict. but it worked on me. i fear upsetting my dad, i am really being serious.

I personally think all of the cars you mention are a little bit 'too much car' for a 16 year old. 90 percent of my friends were in some kind of minor or major car accident in the first year of driving. My parents made me wait till I was 17 till I got my license (I hated them at the time, but I can thank them now). You should save your money and get a used honda Civic or something until you get some experience. Then trade it in for an EVO in a few years.

The idea of somebody owning an EVO or STi at 16 as their first car. It boggles my minds... and frankly... scares the hell out of me.

The thing about a car like an EVO... it's kind of a monster and it WANTS to be driven fast and hard. At 16... I personally don't think you'll have the experience to resist the urge... or to handle the car when the urge comes.

I think of my friends... with the accidents they had... if they had an EVO as their first car... well... they might not be around here anymore.

Sorry to sound grim... and like a parent... but that's just how I fell.

i'm 22 and barely can resist the temptation of driving the car how it wants to be driven. So im going to have to raise the bull.**** flag on this one, theres no way that a 16 yr old kid is going to convince me that his buying a high performance car and going to drive it like a grandma.

I think its honorable that you actually respect your Dad, however you need to have some serious self-control when driving this car. Most teens lack the self-control when driving this car and get into some scary situations.

The car tends to create driver over-confidence and if you don't know how to react if when things go awry then your going to be in a world of trouble. Either way as much as it may not make sense, I hope you realize this is not the type of car to learn how to drive on, and would not be wise idea to get any sort of sports car.

While at this..

i am 18. I donot have the money to buy Evo yet...
and i want nothing but Evo MR.

Evo or bus.

I was reading all 10 pages of this thread.. i am not saying that i am a good driver...
but reading all the advices make me think a bit...

and no, i donot want my parents to buy me my car. Or anyone else.
i want to buy it on my own..

So, may be i will get mine next year, or even the following year...

Evo HAS to be my first car.... and to be honest... i donot know the meaning of tranny or that kind of jargon... all iknow about clutching is that when you are driving at a certain speed, say you are in 5th gear, you cannot suddenly change to 2nd or 1st gear coz that way you will damaged the gearbox (or something like taht)

Can someone explain to me more about clutching damage please...

And, i was reading the other thread about evo being towed on its rear wheel..
that is the first time when i know that an AWD cannot be towed on its rear or front wheel.

and for driving experience, i drove stick when i was 14..
then went overseas for a few years, and after i graduated, i spent 1 year in my country, driving a stick from one city to another... 2 hrs away (my grandma house)
so, i really donot know where do i stand in terms of driving experience...

I admit about that i may not be good enough for Evo.... but really.,.. whatever it is, Evo has to be my first car... I am soooooooooo in love with Evo..

All i can hope is that by the time i got my money, then i would be mature and experienced enough to drive an Evo..
Right now, iam driving Celica 2000 GT automatic, not mine... it is my sister's. so i dont really get to drive alot.

So, please.. people reading this, kindly give me some light about where do i stand and whether i MAY be ready for Evo.. as much as i love to own aan Evo, i also donot want to 'hurt' it...
I know it is kinda early to talk about owning a car..

I am working 20 hrs a week on computer lab with $6 per hour. At this rate, it would take YEARS for me to get my hands on EVo.... but i am not sitting down here doing nothing. I have some knowledge about internet and websites.. so may be i can earn something from that side.

Any advice please............

peace

Here's my opinion on the matter.

If you are a safe driver and do not plan on hitting the track, the Evo is not a good choice at all. There are many cars within the same price range that offer a more comfortable ride and decent speed, like the G35 or the 3-series.

If you plan to hit the tracks, then the Evo will be excellent choice.

Some people will tell you the Evo is great because of AWD. In that case you might want to look into SUVs or an Audi. That way you won't even have to shell out cash for winter/all-season tires.

I think its admirable that your trying to pay for your first car but trying to learn stick and drive an evo as your first car is really not a stellar idea.

If you want to mod your car, learn how to add mods, do basic diy, and just learn more about cars I would look into a nice used manual WRX. They can run from 12-15k, yet have AWD, and are really fun cars to drive and mod.

Excellent idea.

A WRX is a fun car to drive, and there are plenty of cars out there in excellent condition.

I say get the wagon.
