Both cars are great! Either one and youll be smiling everytime you drive.
I personally like the Evo for several reasons, one being very important. The back seat is much roomier. I have two children. Me, wife and kids all fit comfortably. That's pretty cool when you think about the performance of this car vs two door sports cars that cant fit more than two cramped adults.
Oh hell! GET the EVO IX!!!!!!

haha, I just listened to the man himself. . .the Stig. "The Subaru was a good boys car, but that, the Mitsubishi, is a man's car."
FQ320 vs WR1
FQ320 vs WR1
I have both.....the STI is great, DCCD, shift light, sweeping guages, 6 speed......and more. Downsides: small turbo, low boost, thin pistons, suck *** seats!.....not as mod friendly, but ECU will learn fuel up to a 20G!!
My Evo feels more neutral, and has more power potential, awesome seats!.....I love them both.....
The sti is a real drive it and foret it car, the Evo craves mods.
Cheers,

SO WHO"S RIGHT???
Fact is the Evo is far easier to mod and pick up any IF ANY difference in power.
Seems to me like Shiv at Vishnu reported feeling that the Evo IX was considerably underated.
Either car is a great buy. One thing for sure, No other import car has had more positive reviews by independent professionals
To quote one in the UK:
"Consider, then, that while the Evo IX does all this, it is also keeping you safe with one of the most sophisticated four-wheel-drive systems ever put on sale. Finally, take into account that its design has benefited from more than 10 years of competition in, and often at the front of, the world rallying scene.
It is at about this time that the Subaru Impreza lobby will rear its tediously predictable head. While the Impreza is similar in design it is dramatically different in execution and no truly serious driver faced with the choice between the two could ever drive home in a Subaru. A show-off? Yes. A driver, no."
I wouldn't be quite as harsh as he is, but then, I'M not a professional driver either. :-)
Good Luck
