Any Pointers for driving in the Snow?
Ok. My first experience with snow sucked today. I left work early because I knew the traffic would be miscerable plus I live 18 miles north. It took me 4 hours to get home! I will say I'm disappointed in how the car felt. I even bought all weather tires for it about a month ago. I know there not specifically for snow, but much better then the stock ones. It seemed like every time I got up to about 20 or so the car felt like it was about to slide.
That may have been normal as there were lots of drivers who were all over the place including off the road. Some (Mustang/G35/Corvette/few trucks) couldn't even get traction and were just stuck in the middle of the highway.
I will say I'm pretty inexperienced in snow (Originally from Florida).
I was just wondering if you guys who are use to driving your EVO's in the snow could give me some pointers because I wreck!
Thanks!

Sup man!! I would've gone with Bridgestone Blizzaks because they are like the king in the snow!!! Just spend some time with your evo in the snow and go drifting in an empty parking lot and then cruise around. You will feel more relaxed because you will know when your car is sliding and what to do if it does. Also, stay off the boost during normal driving and try to keep from going to fast when making turns. LOL Good luck amigo!!!
Spending time in the snow is a great idea. I did think about doing that but today was the first day of snow this winter. Maybe I'll get out tomorrow and find an empty lot and try it out. Great idea Muslim!

Point it where you want to go and apply as much throttle as you can with minor slippage. Just do not left off the gas until you feel like you ar ein major trouble. With AWD the tire speed will eventually catch up with the road speed as long as you do not get it to twisted up.
Snow + Evo = Lots of fun. I have lived in the snow belt all my life. I witnessed a SUV from FL wipe out in front of me earlier, go figure
But yes take it easy the first few times your out to get a handle for the car, if you bilp the throttle while taking a turn the car pretty much rotates for you, it will also hone your drifting skills LOL.

The parking lot idea is definatly on my list!
Another thing that concerns me are the other drivers! While driving home this evening this one guy in a brandnew Chrysler 300 was tailgating me all the way home! What a dumbas... I still can't figure out how he could stop in time if I had to hit the brakes????

My pointers:
Drive slow
Allow ample braking distance.
Always expect to slide during braking
Two hands on the wheel
Coming to a stop, gradually apply pressure on the brakes without tripping the ABS.
When the ABS starts going off, let off the brakes and gradually apply pressure again.
I found out I stop better if the ABS isn't tripping for more than 3 sec.
Always find a patch where you can see the actual road surface.
Watch your braking on downgrade's
Be carefull while crossing bridge's. The pavement is usually frozen under that snow so watchout.
Do not over countersteer a slide.
If nobody is behind me. I sometimes jab the brakes to have a feel for the road.
Parking lots are fun. You can find out your limits by pushing your car here. But it's still a parking lot.
Real road conditions vary. Such as road crown, uphills, downgrades, 4X4 idiot behind you flashing his light's, ect....
These are just some I can think of right now. I'm sure there are more tips so keep it coming.
It took me 1 1/2 hrs. to get home that normally takes me 20 min.
But hey, I'm not complaning. I got home safely to my family.

I personally like driving in the snow with the ACD set to Tarmac.
When I drive in the snow with the ACD set to Snow it feels like the rear of the car is LESS controlled.
I am also using an extra set of stock enkei wheels with blizzak ws-50 tires.
Other than that I am quite pleased with the grip/stopping on snow or ice. Now if we could only get some of the 6-10" that is hitting the cental eastern states here in Minnesota I could really get a good workout for the ws-50s with AWD!

Great pointers NAD1370! I'll keep those in mind when I'm driving into work tomorrow! Same for the rest of you. I appreciate all of your input. Two things I love, my family and my car! I want to be able to get home to see the kids and wife, and I also want to get my other love home (EVO) in one piece!
I figure after a couple of years in this (sh't), I'll get the hang of it! I sure do miss those warm winter days/nights down in Florida!

get a set of blizzak ws-50's.. when its snowing pull the fuse for your abs... its okay... stopping is greatly shorter witout the abs.. myself and countless other expeirenced evo drivers who drive the car in the snow alot will tell you the same..

just be carefull out there and leave a lil sooner to get to places thats all.
