My wife has an STi, and the one thing that I don't like about it compared to the evo is how it falls flat on it's face after 5500rpms, while the evo keeps on going. The tradeoff is the better low end torque.

All in all, they are both great cars, and quite equal in stock form.

i meant basically an inline 4, but honestly I was just being stupid... I love the evo it sounds great ... but I dont know how anyone can then say the sti sounds horrible (without just being biased)... flat engines are amazing but that is personal preference I suppose so its all good. The guy started the evo9 at the dealer I was at last and even stock it had a nice sound to it

bubble? stock the exhaust doesnt do much of anything like a boxer really does, its quite tame. When you get a catback or whatever it starts to come out... bubble? I have heard it called rumble or maybe burbling... sorta like a V8 or something... a little, I dunno its all opinion and bias I guess, but I absolutly love the sound of a boxer engine decelerating revs... something about that is great IMO... but whatever we will never agree, ahah

Either way you it is better then a ford explorer!! LOL! I don't think you can really go wrong with a Homoglation (sp?) vehicle. I don't know that one is hugely "better" then the other, Just different. In my test drives before buying I think the STi makes a better daily driver but I think the evo handles better. The dopest Scooby I have been in is my friend put an Sti engine in a RS2.5. That thing was the SH*T! I bet If you end up with an STI you will be able to give us a couple of things you like a little better and a couple you miss about the EVO and I bet that is about it

I'm biased due to a year's worth of racing - drag, auto-x, and road - against STi's. They simply cannot touch what I've done without upgrading their turbo, which is a major undertaking. They also can't get anywhere close while spending no more than $1000. That's why I think of them as slow...not because they are slow in stock form, but fairly slow in racing form (in my experience).

yeah I concur, the modified evo's are amazing, easy to mod, great stuff for power and out of the box handling is nice. But in autox competition, the cars are WAY to similar, in fact I find it quite rediculous to ever base cars on autox unless you are driving both because as we know autox is ALL driving skill and then tires, then the car... I dont care if you have an enzo or a sweet evo/sti the car could easily be beaten by a driver in a "crappy" car if you dont drive your "nice" car correctly. Anyway then roadracing? you mean HPDE's well HPDE's arnt really racing, again driver skill, driver skill, driver skill. Anyway I guess this is retarded to argue about, just my .02 cents please dont take our arguement personally or seriously, or as a "typical sti owner, blah blah"

Hey, take your pick on what racing venue you want to use for comparison. I did all 3, and all 3 had the same result.

Remember, this is all just going back to why _I_ (just me, no one else) associate that annoying Boxer sound with something that is "slow." STi's are great machines, but severely hindered for my purposes.

Money-wise (incentives) it's easier to purchase STI.

Stock for stock you can't go wrong either way, when my turbo spools it's fast and hard and I don't think it's much different than the Evo. Although the Evo can pull through redline where the STi drops off at about 6k rpm. You can't go wrong either way man. Try it, what do you have to lose?

my two cents,

an STi owner
if you base on paper, the evo IX dyno more WHP than the STI.
