What exactly is compressor surge? What does it sound like and what does it feel like?

 

On my EvoIII B16G equipped Eclipse it was a WHAWHAWHAWHA sound, the turbo "spools" and the engine revs, the boost guage shudders, but it feels like there's no turbo pressure at all because acceleration is basically flat. There are several things that can cause it, but for me it was because my BOV spring was too tight. My Evo doesn't do it because she is stock.

It's a little stutter you'll hear when you let off the gas. It happens to me a little bit at low rpms sometimes. You can't feel it. I think it occurs when the turbo psi doesn't get reciculated or vented out the BOV.

 

if feels like your rpm has a mind of its own.

the rpm rises when you shift. That's all.

air trying to stop the turbo blade, it shutters.

 

how bad is it to have?

 

wears the turbo out a lot. make the turbine blade have play, etc.

 

how do you get rid of it, lol

 

vta. or change your bov, adjust it.

most of the time, it happens with recirculating your bov... for me.

I vta, didn't happen again.

 

That's what I experience sometimes when I drive hard and let off too quickly. I had the idea that my stock BOV was not releasing air fast enough, but I wasn't sure. I think I'll replace it with the APS BOV.
