ya but when i see the arrow pointing forward..then it goes to the side then to the back..i know i have safely passed the object weather its a hiding cop, or one of those obvious digital speed readouts. but usually whenever ka goes off ill slow down.

One of the many issues with the V1 is its lack of portability. I owned one for a while and sold it with the car. I also owned a Passport Solo2 (8500) and found out just how portable it was when it was stolen out of my 2G Spyder (top was up) while I was in a movie theater. So....I went to the opposite of portable -- remote. Passport SRX. I did a LOT of research on this, and decided that this was the best that money could buy. To explain my reasoning, I'll post what I wrote in another thread..

"The obvious solution to this problem is to slow down on public roads."

Since I'm not so good at this myself, I invested in the Passport SRX remote radar detector. (www.passportsr1.com/srx.htm) <-- The best $ can buy, IMHO.

You mentioned that your "radar detector" never went off, and yet the cop showed you the gun. Perhaps he was using laser, or instant-on radar. Both of these are harder to detect, and extremely hard to detect with a conventional windshield/cabin-mounted unit. For instance, if he zapped you from behind with laser, chances are that your cabin-mounted unit didn't even know what was happening because the laser signal never even made it inside the car -- it just bounced off of the rear (license plate most likely) and back to his gun. The same can happen on the front of the car. Instant-on radar is easier to detect, but it comes on at the very last minute and you would have probably picked up a signal; albeit too late. So how on earth are you supposed to detect radar/laser whenever you are hit? One way is to have sensors mounted on the front and rear of the car...where the guns are most likely to aim. The ValentineOne crowd will argue till they're blue in the face that they can detect just as well from within the cabin -- they're wrong. It's just plain physics. A unit can't detect a signal it doesn't receive.

I had a v1 for a little while. It picked up every electronic door anywhere near me even on the least sensitive mode it had (ulta logic or whatever it was). I think that is what most radar detectors would have done but it just got real old real quick. I find it a lot better to just keeps my eyes open and not do stupid things in busy parts of town or with anyone around. Pay attention and you will be fine without a radar detector.

Oh okay, yeah in that case you know it's something gone. It seems like every single CHP car I've seen has been using Ka in California, but I'm not sure what most of the troopers up here in Oregon use.

I have the blue display x50, best radar detector IMHO, the v1 is nice with the arrows but does lack a little in the distance category

How about this.....

I also have the BEL Pro RX65.....

Still, there is no guarantee that the gendarmes wont nail me... I try not to speed too, but it's so easy to let the pedal creep down and the speed creep up. I've gotten my share of technically deserved but fairly unjust citations.... I think that sometimes certain cars get singled out and often.

Has worked every time, no tickets in the 1+ year that I've owned it.

Keen observation and common sense will keep you out of speeding tickets a lot more than some stupid-*** arrows. And you'll have an extra $150 in your pocket for the gas that your burning.

V1
I don't understand what makes the arrows so special either... After all, when the sound alarm goes off, I don't think anybody is gonna keep speeding while looking to see which arrow is blinking . Personally, if I hear the radar detector go off, I immediately slow down, even when I'm not going fast.... I don't want any more confusing information. The arrows and stuff just causes to detector to become bulky and heavy. I prefer simplicity.

What makes the arrows so special is that when it dows go off, you know where to look for him.

Most of the time, when driving to work, there is someone hiding back in a parking lot along the 14 mile drive to work. They are always switching it up, and the arrows help me in identifying where he is hiding.

The only real way for someone who has no V1 experience is to borrow one for a bit, or just trust what the majority of people say, and just pony up and get one. If you look at the resale of these things on EBay, I would hope that you get tehe drift that they are pretty good because their resale is like 10%-15 lower than what you can buy them for, even for a year old one.

I have one, and mine was stolen (Never recovered), and I couldn't live without it, so within a week i went and bought another one hoping that the thief would eventually call in for parts, and they would find mine by the serial number. (Never happened though).

On a bunch of other forum's I am on, it seems as though the general population of "radar detector" people seem to be like this:

1. If they have a Valentine 1, they would rather die than get rid of it.
2. If they have something else, they hate Valentine 1 even though they never owned one.
3. Very few people I have ever encountered have actually owned one, and didn't like it.
4. Overall just dumb people. (Their opinion's down count.)

Another thing is when the radar detector shows me that the cop is shooting radar behind me, I know to speed up and get the *** outta dodge before he catches me!

Seriously, depending on where the arrow is pointing, I know if I can still keep up the pace, or I really should slow down...

What possible difference can it make where the cop with the radar is at? If you get nailed with the radar, it does not matter at all where he got you from . OTOH, if the alarm goes off and it saves you from getting a ticket, it does not matter where the radar was either. I still think that if you start looking around for the cop instead of minding your driving, you are much more likely to speed and waste the warning. If you like to see arrows and lights, by all means get the V1. If you want radar warning you can consider other products. I think the different alarms for various frequencies of radar as well as the strength of the radar signal are very useful. AFAIC, the arrows are fluff. Of course, YMMV, etc.

Been there and done that. I tried the V1 years ago and found it too chatty... For me, the number and intensity of all those arrows and blips indicating every supermarket and convenience store door opener was just too much. Also, it was by far the biggest unit I tried as well as the most expensive. Maybe I should try one again though... They might have improved them since then.
