I think if you had showed up with credit card in hand and said, I need you guys to fix this, give me an estimate - it would have been a lot shorter process.
True, but who would actually do that with a warrantied vehicle?

I don't know about any good ones, when I tried to take mine in to get the clear coat peeling problem on the wing checked out. The Service Manager gave me a real hassle over the matter. For crying out loud what does modding a car have to affect the clear coat? I even came on here to search around a bit before I gone in to see that If I was the only one.

I've only got a Turbo Timer and I'm already getting hassled over the matter.

The increased forces of acceleraton will cause the clearcoat to peel prematurely. VOID!!!

First of all I admit I didn't read the last three pages. Forgive if you answered already Why did you have copper plugs in there. I have granted, only "heard"/read here actually, that these cars will not run, or at least run well withput ir plugs. I think they are suposed to be good for at least 40k+, right? Can anyone else confirm this?

Enjoy fixing that Subie, especialy since the plugs in those things are mashed up against each strut tower.

I dont understand why they didnt want to take care of you. Mitsu is aware of the caborn fiber wing clear coat problem and has a TSB on the matter. It even says the customer can pick between the evo 8 or 9 spoiler. But to let the customer know that the 9 wing has been updated and should resolve the problem. Report that dealerships lack of wanting to help via 1-800-222-0037.

I know I couldn't go without my car for 12 weeks. Maybe sometime along the way a person might change their mind and think maybe they have to be responsible for their actions and just go ahead and pay.

It took them 11 weeks to properly diagnose the problem. Sure, some of that was waiting for the oil test to come back, but that's hardly my fault. I told them what was in there, and in the end I provided the documentation they needed. After the 11 week diagnosis it took them 2 weeks to get the parts and fix the issue, then it took me 72 hours to settle into the seat of an STi.

As for the copper plugs, I believe the common consensus is that they respond well in turbo vehicles, but you have to change them more often. Not a problem in the Evo, but for the STi, I'll stick with the Iridium, knowing how hard they are to swap... They're worse than swapping plugs in an FD for god's sake. I just think it's crap that the tech told me that they wouldn't work in the Evolution when I'd been running them for nearly 11,000 miles.

In an effort to lay some of this to rest, here's my thoughts so far:

This is not a thread to slam Mitsubishi, nor the Evo, nor promote the STi, it's a thread telling you all my experience. I love the Evo, I just wish I hadn't had this bad experience. If my local dealer would have handled this better the STi wouldn't even be in the picture, yet here we are. I've always had a great amount of respect for both the STi and the Evo, both are absolutely fantastic vehicles. Each have their benefits, and their downfalls. I believe it all comes out in the wash, especially for those of you whose positions may be reversed... (bad subie dealer, great mitsu dealer) Fact is I love cars, especially AWD Turbo cars but when a business does me dirty like mitsu did, I'm unlikely to respond well. I seriously doubt I'm alone here.

On October 24th, Mitsu contacted me for the first time without my having contacted them in an effort to check the status of my vehicle. They informed me that they had come to the conclusion that I was not changing my oil every 3000 miles, and I wasn't using synthetic oil. The result of this was that 14 out of the 16 lifters were completely clogged. I assured them that I was in fact changing my oil every 3000 miles with full synthetic 5W30 Mobil 1.
at this point, you should have pulled out the service manual and show them that it states that the oil should be changed every 5000 miles and not 3000.

Good god, what the hell is wrong with that dealership? Threads like these scare me away from purchasing a used or new evo. My local dealership is also a pain in the ***, so I stay away from that as much as possible, but the next closes one (ontario mitsu) isn't much better at all (had a really really bad experince w/ them).

With that said, good luck w/ the STi.

Lightning,

Thanks for the read. You seem like a level-headed person that knows what they're talking about... just what a dealership hates most! Well done and congrats on the STI. Personally I have never heard of CW on an Evo and it kind of freakes me out (have a 99 GST), but I just hope I got one of the good one. There are a lot of people on the board that are making 300, 400+ whp on their daily driven Evos with no problems. Just seems like luck of the draw and it sucks the dealership threw away a Mitsu customer like that.

What did you do with your Evo after they were done "fixing" it? You said you dropped it off there, but how...?

Is there any way to tell what day of the week one's car was built? Is it in the VIN somewhere?

I traded in the Evo just after they put the new short block in. They did a crappy job and when they were finished there were several problems. All of them would have taken me about 4 hours to fix up, from re-finishing and painting the heat-shield to replacing several missing parts / bolts, but at that time, especially considering I was planning on trading in / selling the car anyway, the last thing I should have done was driven the STi. After the drive I had only planned on seeing what they could do for me, then they ended up giving me 2k more than what I owed on the Evo, the STi for invoice, 4.9% financing, lifetime dealer oil changes, and I only had to put down is $500. I just couldn't walk away from that, so I drove instead (in the STi). They gave me the weekend to get the parts off my car (exhaust, intake, radio, arm brace, turbo timer, etc. - exhaust & intake I sold, arm brace & TT I still have, and I put the radio in my wife's Liberty Renegade) and I turned in the car the following Tuesday when I signed the final paperwork for the loan on the STi. The STi I got has the boost gauge on it (crap) so I want to sell / trade it to someone with a "virgin" steering column cover, put the Blitz DTT-DC (has boost gauge) in, sell the arm brace, and call it a day.
