evo paint sucks
evo paint sucks
Let's get this straight. I can't afford an Evo, and even if I could, it's the wrong car for me. A WRX wagon is more my flavor right now, but I think the Evo is an amazing car.
I watched 3 of them come off the truck yesterday and checked them out. Awesome attention to detail, even liked the CF wing.
Lows?
- The horns look horribly wimpy. Someone is going to make a fortune selling Supertones to Evo owners. This must be a Japanese thing with the "meep" horns.
- The interior is kind of low rent, as you know, other than the seats. I saw the factory gauge pack on one of the cars and it looks just as crappy as the Subaru one.
- Finally, the real low, and reason for posting. The paint. I haven't seen that much orange peel on anything but an...orange. The colors I saw were blue (gorgeous), black, and silver. It was least noticeable on the silver, but still there.
I have no idea why the paint looks this way, but it would bother me if I were paying this much money for a car.

to be honest, with few exceptions, the paint on most Japanese cars sucks. dunno why it is, but I know a ton of people with imports, and accross the board, the paint is sub-par for the cost of the car.
Re: evo paint sucks
The orange peel effect is common to just about all modern car paints - at least I can't think of any new cars that don't have that. The Evo does not seem to be any better or any worse than anything else I am familiar with. Its an artifact of the new generation of more environmentally friendly paints. These paints also seem to take several years or so to really cure, which is where all the complaints about stone-chipping and such come from IMHO.
My WRX suffers with soft paint - my Missus's Honda is leagues better. The '01 Toyota Celica GTS I had before that was excellent too. I wouldn't say it's naturally endemic to Japanese cars, but they do need to sort it out....
My maximas paint wasn't the worst of Japanese cars I've seen but is no where near the quality of say my sisters IS300. IMO Merc Benz has the best paint and some of the worst cars (ie value of what you get dollar for dollar) Personally Ill take a better car and worse paint anyday. If its a show car paint it right and if its a race car and/or daily driver then who cares, just wax it more often.

I'm not being mean...I just got a laugh out of the thought.
