Evo in the snow and sleet.

Since it is awd, i thought i would rather try a 4-5k clutch drop while it is wet (cold) and slippery out.

after some spinning, it got moving pretty quickly....but then it smelled awfull.? My typhoon never used to stink when it spun in the wet.

Is there a break in period for making the AWD parts work? That would be the first real time the car has used it's awd for real.

I did it twice and it stunk both times.

If you did a 4-5k clutch drop, I'm guessing you were smelling the clutch.

It just snowed a little here and is supposedly 28 degrees with the windchill. I'm afraid of driving around after reading the warning stickers about cold weather.

It's almos April...damn Northeast.

See this is the one thing that bothers me about this car. What's the point of awd if it is useless on this car cause of the tires? Kinda stinks that u have to go out and buy another set of tires just for it to run in snow. Has anyone tried driving the evo in snow? How is it in the rain? It just seems like these tires are only good for dry roads no?

why would i smell clutch if all 4 were spinning from the get-go?

My S2000 would only smell like clutch if you dropped it and the back tires did not break loose......

Your clutch was still spinning at 4-5 K and then had a sudden load dropped on it. The tires didn't instantaneously speed up to spinning - the clutch had to slip a bit there and quite hard.

As for your S2000, I can't really say, but maybe if it's got to do with flywheel or clutch weight or material or sopmething...

It is very difficult to break the tires loose on an stock AWD as it is designed to provide traction. On snow and ice you can spin them but I can do the same in my Ford Explorer. Attempting a clutch drop on dry/semi dry road in an attempt to spin tires is not recommended and can result in wheel hop which can cause serious damage to the drivetrain.

The AWD of cars like EVO and STi, etc will work great in any kind of weather. The trick as you say is the tires. If you want great traction in dry, hot asphalt, the sticky summer tires are unbeatable. If you are willing to sacrifice some of that great performance, search for the best touring or all-weather tires you can find. You'll not be disappointed. Of course, you could always stick on a set of non-dot rally tires.........

The car feels very stable in the rain IMO. It feels safer in the rain than any other cars I've driven under those conditions.

And people wonder why Mitsu and SOA waited so long to bring their tubro AWD cars here...People in the US want an Evo and STi, but complain about having to come to grips with the reality of a car with stock summer performance tires.

The Advans on your Evo should be fine in the rain, but as you know the lower temps will make their compound get hard in a hurry, making snow and cold weather driving treacherous, although not impossible if you are really careful.

Get a cheap set of rims to put winter tires on and you will be unstoppable in anything but high centering conditions (deep snow).
