CD Player and Speakers

For those of you who already own an Evo, how would you rate the CD player and more importantly the speakers? Do they sound like normal stock speakers, or do they sound better? Does anyone know what company made the sound system? I have a '96 GSX with stock Infinity speakers which I think sound really good.

My Evo is due to come first week in May. I just want to know what to expect, or if I will need to buy other speakers and such.

Ahh, not really but at least it has an equalizer. They are ok but i wouldn't say they sound good.

As for evo speaker isn't not comparable to other 30+k or 20K cars such as
Mercedes, BMW's, Caddys, and even GM/bose setup. or even the regular delcos on GMC/ chevy trucks.
Altima base radio even sound better.

They are pretty sucky but better than ford Tempo, Toyota camery, about par with dodge caravan or even the hondy oddessy.

15 Watt paper speakers X 4
Tweaters X 2

I disagree, but then again ... I'm an audio guru. I replaced my front speakers with MB Qaurt Premium 6.5 components (tweeter fits nicely in tweeter slot), my back speakers with Bostom RM6 Coax, and added a Kicker Solobaric L5 in a 2.5 cubic box in the trunk. I swapped the deck with a sweet Alpine and I'm powering the system with a JL single Audio 500.5. The system slams and is extremely clean, all for about $1800 ... but well worth it. IMO, the stock system is basically crap unless you don't plan to jam out.

Sounds like a sweet sound system! I don't see anything wrong with upgrading if you want and if you can. For me, the stock system is not that bad. I don't agree that any car has a better system, but it is definitely not and audiophole's dream

I'm going to add a powered subwoofer that I have from another car, that might help the system a good bit. Actually, when I went to a High Fi buys store, the salesman thought that the speakers were "not that bad" (his words).

There are some other cosiderations that might affect what you want in your car. First is exactly what do you want the system to do? If you are like me and listen to stuff from 70 - 80 year old tango music from CDs recorded from scratchy, noisy old vinyl discs or '50s Jazz, or Latin Music (Salsa, merengue, Latin Jazz) You probably can get by pretty well with the stock system plus a subwoofer.

Another thing, for me it's very important that my car looks totally unappealing to stereo thiefs. I would bet that I would have busted windows and a gutted car within months if not weeks if there is some cool aftermarket gear visible through the windows

For me, I'm gonna stick with the stock system. I might perhaps upgrade speakers a bit in the future, but I doubt that I'll need or want anything else.

just my $.02

silverEVO8, I just want to share that after replaceing only the stock speaker with aftermarkets, the sound quality and clearlity went up dramatically. It's also easy to do and no one is able to tell in the stock location. I'm thinking about a sub also . Let me know how your project goes

Yea the speakers aren't all that ... but if you hook up a nice clean & powerful amp to them -- they will most definitely sound better. I hooked up my JL amp to them before my Qaurts came in and it made a world of difference! I actually could have lived with that set-up plus a sub if I wasn't such an audio junky.

That's interesting, how did you hook up the amp to the stock head unit? Does it have line outputs? That would be great! I could add a good amp and just chill for a while

The stock head unit is the biggest limitation from what I can gather. Replacing it with my Blau from my old car improved sound quite a bit. The stock speakers aren't the cleanest sound for highs and lows, but they are capable of much more than the stock head unit puts out.

They have a very good frequency response (very wide range), which comes from the fact that they are paper cones. Most people don't realize the potential of paper cones, but they usually do sound better and just aren't as durable, especially in an automative atmosphere.

Oh yeah, I'm assuming it sounds about the same as the system in the normal Lancers, which is from what I can see the same.

My only issues so far are the somewhat constant CD skipping while cruising. Stereo is fine of course but it's just that it seems the stiff ride likes to give the CDs I've been listening to a very hard time. I don't really care too much but you wanted to know.

SilverEV08,

Sorry ... forgot to mention that you would also have to add a better CD player with line outputs. I installed my Alpine 1st thing so I didn't really think about that and forgot to mention. But if you swap out the deck and hook up a good qaulity multichannel amp to the speakers, you should easily get by for a while. Strong/clean power will make those paper cones & stock tweeters come alive ... not to that of high qaulity, larger power handling speaker like a Qaurt or Boston, but it will definitely be a night & day difference!

I didnt' do component speakers. I actually went cheap, need brake pads and etc.. Stock pillar speakers

Front
Kenwood eXcelon KFC-X178 6-3/4" 2-way Speakers

rear
Kenwood KFC-1789ie 6-3/4" 3-way Speakers

Reciever
Alpine CDA-9815
27 watts RMS/60 peak x 4 channels CD frequency response 5-20,000 Hz CD signal-to-noise ratio 105 dB FM sensitivity 9.3 dBf

Sounds so much better! Just need a sub for the low volume deep bass.

Thinking about cheaping on those too and go with the infiniti basslink.

Any speaker upgrade will help in replacing the stock speakers ... just make sure you also upgrade your head unit and add an external amp if you really want to do it right! Or ... if you want to save money, and improve sound qaulity/overall volume, then add a multichannel amp and a better head unit (CD player) and that will be a nice improvement.

I changed out my stereo the second day I had the car. I put in an alpine head unit, mb quartz tweeters, jl audio 6.5, all powered by an alpine amp, and a mtx sub powered by a pioneer amp. The install job looks really clean to, I mounted the amps on the back of the rear seats in the truck with my capacitor on the side. I definately recommend changing out the stereo; I really enjoy driving the car now.
