Im sorry that over 2000 american soldiers had to die for that reason, and over 30,000 "liberated" Iraqi civilians. The ozone layer is the only thing protecting us from the suns harmful gases. It seems you need another class lesson on this. Ok get your pen and paper out class has begun again.

The ozone layer, or ozonosphere (rarely used term), is that part of the Earth's stratosphere which contains relatively high concentrations of ozone (O3). "Relatively high" means a few parts per million - much higher than the concentrations in the lower atmosphere but still small compared to the main components of the atmosphere. The photochemical mechanisms that give rise to the ozone layer were worked out by the British physicist Sidney Chapman in 1930. Ozone in the earth's stratosphere is created by ultraviolet light striking oxygen molecules containing two oxygen atoms (O2), splitting them into individual oxygen atoms (atomic oxygen); the atomic oxygen then combines with unbroken O2 to create ozone, O3. The ozone molecule is also unstable (although, in the stratosphere, long-lived) and when ultraviolet light hits ozone it splits into a molecule of O2 and an atom of atomic oxygen, a continuing process called the ozone-oxygen cycle, thus creating an ozone layer in the stratosphere. Tropospheric ozone has two sources: about 10 % is transported down from the stratosphere while the remainder is created in situ in smaller amounts through different mechanisms.

About 90% of the ozone in our atmosphere is contained in the stratosphere, the region from about 10 to 50km (32,000 to 164,000 feet) above Earth's surface. Ten percent of the ozone is contained in the troposphere, the lowest part of our atmosphere where all of our weather takes place. Ozone concentrations are greatest between about 15 and 40 km, where they range from about 2 to 8 parts per million. If all of the ozone were compressed to the pressure of the air at sea level, it would be only a few millimeters thick.

Although the concentration of ozone in the ozone layer is very small, it is vitally important to life because it absorbs biologically harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the Sun. UV radiation is divided into three categories, based on its wavelength; these are referred to as UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C. UV-C, which would be very harmful to humans, is entirely screened out by ozone at around 35 km altitude.

UV-B radiation is the main cause of sunburn; excessive exposure can also cause genetic damage, resulting in problems such as skin cancer. The ozone layer is very effective at screening out UV-B; for radiation with a wavelength of 290 nm, the intensity at Earth's surface is 350 million times weaker than at the top of the atmosphere. Nevertheless, some UV-B reaches the surface. Most UV-A reaches the surface; this radiation is significantly less harmful, although it can potentially cause genetic damage.

Depletion of the ozone layer would allow more of the UV radiation, and particularly the more harmful wavelengths, to reach the surface, causing increased genetic damage to living things.

Dude you don't understand what I am trying to say! I know we need the ozone layer! I know it would destroy us if we didn't have it. I am saying that THE OZONE LAYER DOES NOT INFLUENCE GLOBAL WARMING. Thats it all. UV rays kill us, but they wouldn't increase the globe's temperature if the ozone layer didn't stop it.

Seriously I don't go to a POS college. Wisconsin-Madison is one of the top research universities in the nation. Despite whether or not you went to a better college rank-wise it does not matter, my school is very good. if you are so keen on insulting my school where did you go?

Look son, I just posted a detailed description on why the ozone layer(and ozone depletion) is directly related to global warming. Please read my earlier post again very carefully. You are twisting my post. I woudl appreciate it if you didNOT do this.

I do know that college. I had a friend that went there and he left after the first semester cause of how liberal it was and how wrong it was in correlation to teaching the facts.

A college is only as good as its teachers. IMO the colleges that were great at one time are now the worst in some cases. I attended a few graduate courses at UCSD and then I attended some classes at my community college and found that the community college was covering more material more indepthly than this supposed great university. Not to mention I learned alot of this stuff watching the discovery and History channel hahaha. I hope you arent waisting your money on a education that I can receive via watching reruns on the H channel hahahaha.

 

your description above details only how the ozone layer works, not its relationship with the warming of the globe. You need to tell me how the ozone layer effects global warming, not how it works. your comments on higher education are rediculous and utterly wrong. To have such strong opinions on universities when you never attended one is absurd. if we are having difficulty argueing about the same thing then i don't see the point.

You might be surprised I actually agree with you on this. The 2nd amendment was put in place to protect the people from an out of control government. I respect that right and believe that law abiding citizens should be allowed to own as many guns as they want, cause everyone already knows the criminals have the guns anyway. I actually wish concealed carry was legal where I live as long as you pass some type of proper gun saftey and psychoanalysis test. I live in Brooklyn, New York City and criminals walk the streets with uzi's yet if I was caught carrying a weapon I legally own I would be put in jail. That I do not agree with, I should be able to protect myself from criminals and a dictatorship just the same.

But on a side note, this proves my point, people in this thread were calling me a liberal nutjob but my feelings on this issue are very conservative. The fact is that nothing is either black or white, there are many sides to different issues and people who blindly accept one way of thought simply because the person telling them something is also a republican, democrat, conservative or whatever they may be is just as bad as the people who listend to Hitlers orders to exterminate the jews, or the people who blow themselves up while killing innocent civilians cause their "leader" told them thats the right thing to do.

I agree with you here too. I think everyone who loves this country and loves the ideals of this country can find a common ground and a common goal even though we may have different opinions on things. I used to live in QB. I definitely understand where you are coming from. Brooklyn is full of people who have some huge fire power. I lived in some rough neighborhoods in my time and I understand the danger aspect and the need to protect yourself.

However, there is no grey area about politicians taking away our rights it is plainly wrong! That is a fact. And it needs no debating about.

 

There is a group of Bikers who follow her around and when they start to protest, they rev their motors so you can only hear their Harleys reving and not their "GOD HATES ****!!!! YOU SENT YOUR SON TO HELLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!" which of course is better to hear those motors.

FYI--No battle has been as clean and efficient, in the history of warfare, as Operation Iraqi Freedom.
