TopGear Evo VIII vs STi article

Since we don't have enough Evo vs. STi threads, here's another. Euro versions of both with the STi fitted with the PPP. Sounds like the same old story: the STi is easier to live with on a daily basis and the Evo has sharper handling and a harsher ride.

Thanks to Bazza (webmaster of lancer-evo.net) over at MLR:

hmm......after looking at the article, it states that the Evo does 0-60 in 4.9sec & 1/4mile in 13.7sec......whereas the STI does 0-60 in 5.3 and the 1/4mile in 13.8sec ?? Every other article shows that the STI is quicker however this one shows that the Evo is?? odd eH?

Does anyone know if the UK STi has the same Spec C suspension geometries (front and rear) that the USDM STi will have?

Nice reading, just wonder how will the US Specs EVO vs STi's will do on reviews since we are getting slightly different cars.

0 to 60 times of 5.3 are the times of the normal STi in Europe. The ppp Sti is always around 4.6, Maybe there is where the confusion is? Maybe it's not the ppp package? Or the guy just can't drive. Even in the Us subaru is already officially claiming 4.8 secs now.

What blows me away about that review is the difference in laptimes. The EVO show its tail to the STi by 3.3 seconds is a HUGE difference. While we are getting largely the same cars, of course the few important missing bits liek the 6 speed and ltd slip front diff must contribute to that advbantage over the scooby, but by how much is the question.

The other important bits in that article such as the superior braking, and steering are encouraging, as we of course are getting identical parts.

Defanitley leaning twords EVO over STi.

you mean that makes *REAL* EVO so much better than a subaru...

No, it doesn't have the front spec c setup. But I believe the changes to the rear suspension are the same on all Imprezas. Strangely, this STi also has the very heavy Prodrive P1 wheels (compared to the forged BBS US gets std and JDM has as option).

You guys obviously haven't seen the best motoring video that is out there. Here is a link http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...=sti+and+video

now the file is huge

It's towards the end of the video but it has the japanese versions of the sti and the evo. The evo rs Vll with ayc/ayd does ok and come in 3rd., the evo grs Vll with out the ayc/ayd gets walked on by everyone and comes in last. The sti with the r/a spec c once it gets out of the pack absolutely pulls away from everyone. That is the susepension the new sti will have. Plus a more powerful motor. The other sti's had an older spec c suspension and a regular sti suspension. This was a 5 lap race.

Laptimes were

Car best lap Total lap time
ra/spec c sti 1:05:68 Lap 5 5:35:45
sti 1:06:65 Lap 5 5:37:58
evo 7 rs with ayc 1:06:64 Lap 5 5:37:84
old sti with spec c 1:06:46 Lap 2 5:38:14
evo 7 gsr 1:06:46 Lap 3 5:38:56

They listed the wrong torque figure for the Evo. 184 ft-lb should be 284 ft-lb.

I'm willing to bet that on a typical road course or an autocross track, a stock USDM STi will lap faster than a stock USDM EVO.

If you look at "Best Motoring's" lap times from Tsubuka, you will notice that the JDM EVO and the JDM STi generally put in very similar lap times, with a VERY slight edge to the EVOs. However, the JDM STi and EVO produce similar bhp. The USDM STi's 29 bhp advantage and the USDM Evo's lack of a front LSD should skew the results in the STi's favour.

Tsukuba Lap Times of STOCK Evo V, VI, VII and New shape STi from recent "Best Motoring" tests.
http://www.tuningpt.com/store/tsukuba.htm
Notice how close all the lap times are! The spread from the 2nd fastest to the 2nd slowest is only 1 second.
1:04.65 Evo V RS
1:04.93 Evo VII RS
1:05.12 Sti Type RA Spec C (2001)
1:05.15 Evo VI RS
1:05.56 Sti Spec C (2003)
1:05.57 Sti (2003)
1:05.69 Evo VI GSR
1:05.72 Evo VI GSR TME
1:05.84 STi Spec C (2001)
1:05.93 Evo VII GSR
1:07.09 Evo V GSR

It's interesting how the fastest EVO and STi are NOT the latest versions. I couldn't find anything on the EVO VIII.

And STi is like a banana, right?
Lets see:
This EVO has ACD, front LSD, less emisions to worry about (so probably more power), lighter. The UK STi has no DCCD, no twin scroll (or bigger engine) and it's, I believe, heavier then EVO UK.
SO I'll say fun article but we are getting two very different cars here. Weit for next month and we'll see.

BTW: In March EVO (UK Magazine) they complained about brake fade on their longtermer. They said three laps and brakes are toasted.
