you are kinda screwed, suck it up and pay the fines and impound fees. you knew you shouldnt be driveing the car and took a chance and as fate would have it you zipped away from an a$$hole cop at a light and he nailed ya. live and learn and be glad he didnt nail ya for wreckless whatever.

that is kinda amazing though. they actualy impound your car for expired plates there? we just get a ticket and have to apear in court , if we show proof we renewed the plates it gets dropped

That is wrong. The police officer had probable cause to pull him over and issue a citation. He did not have probable cause to search the vehicle unless he suspected you were armed, which an import driving thug like yourself must be . In that case he could have searched the passenger compartment for a weapon within reach (the entire passenger compartment).

Once it was decided the car was being impounded then they can inventory the contents. Please folks do not let officers ransack your car everytime you get pulled over for a citation.

Sorry to hear about this sort of thing happening. Here's the deal with what the Police did. Ok, you already know you shouldn’t have been driving a car with expired tags. The Police do have the right to inventory the items in your vehicle because it was being impounded. That includes the glove box & trunk. The damage caused by the tow truck is the tow company’s responsibility. If you believe the Police mistreated you contact the department involved to file a complaint. The department will know which officers were involved from the impound & ticket. Also most Police departments have in car audio & video so the whole incident may have been taped. Once you get your car out of impound get it registered and go to court. The reason for going to court is to get a break on the 5 points that ticket carries. When you get in the courtroom don't act like an idiot towards the Judge just explain what happened and bring proof that the vehicle is registered. The registration card is proof of that. You might also think about getting a lawyer. Good luck!!!

OUCH....I hate reading posts like these. **** happens, it never fails. I have learned to drive like a cop is watching me at all times, especially in the EVO. At that time of night, even more so. I hope it works out for you.

I dont know what the law is down there, but I would have told him take me to jail. They are not above the law, granted you were wrong for having expired tags. He was not allowed to search your car without a warrant. That right there would overide everything. I dont care what the situation is. They should also pay for all the damage to the car. They would have to take me to jail that night. DICK HEADED PIGS. Well not all of them.

Fileing a complaint against the cops won't do much good. It doesnt seem like they did anything outside their authority. They cant be charged for being @$$holes.

1. It is legal to impound your car for expired tags, MOST situations however, they don't do it. So that cop had it in his mind before you even stopped to give you the max under the law. Sorry about your luck.
2. The towing company should pay for all damages, or I'd sue.
3. Go to court and give them your honest sob story, i think it's a good chance you'll get at least the fine revoked.

good luck.

Cops should be fighting real crime instead of doing stuff like this...
There's more harmful crimes out there like rape, robbery, assult, drug dealing...etc..than expired tags. It is BS.
