My EVO was impounded. (LONG)

I know that this was very stupid, but I figured since I had all the paperwork with me and the inspection failure papers that I might be able to get away if anything should happen. Leaving the grocery store a cop pulls up behind me. I don't see him, so I pull away rather fast from the stop light and accelerated up to the speed limit (wasn't speeding though) and all of a sudden I noticed lights. So I pull over into the nearest parking lot and prepare for the worst. The cop immediately asks me if I was trying to run from him. I told him no, I didn't see your lights until I had pulled away from the light. He claims that he had his lights on the whole time I was at the light. Somehow I don't believe him. Anyways he tells me since my tags are expired that my car will be towed. He asks for my keys and I give them to him and he proceeds to search my car. I told him he doesn't have permission to search my car, and he replies "I don't need any permission". So I sit and wait until the tow truck arrives. Luckily it is a flatbed and it won't destroy my drivetrain. Since my car is lowered (tein flex coilover) while the back end was pulled onto the truck the front lip scraped very badly on the concrete and did alot of damage to the underside of the front lip, and busted alot of clips and cut the paint to shreds. I start to examine the damage to my car and the second officer who had showed up starts pushing me away from the car shouting "Leave right now! Leave! This is OUR property now!". He had his hand on his pistol while shoving me away. I asked for his badge number and he replies "If you want my badge number then you can go to jail right now". I was on the phone with a friend when he said this to me and she overheard the conversation. So I just walked over to the adjacent parking lot and waited (with groceries in hand) while they finished loading the truck and both cops left with the tow truck. They wrote me a citation for $280 (driving unregistered vehicle). The impound fee is another $160 + $25 per every day left there. I know it is my fault for driving the car while it had expired tags, but what are your opinions on this situation?

Ohhhh I forgot your a GED Marine so you would be in tough guy mode and say take me to jail, and then realize later, dam "I wasted my 1k allowence a month the government gives me DAm".

The Moral of this story is HAVE YOUR CAR ON THE ROAD LEGAL and none of this would have happened.
Look all the cop hater fan boys relax for a second. There are three sides to this story, his, the cops, and the truth.
And no the copd DIDNT have to get concent to search the car if it was being impounded, its a safety issue. If you would have had it registered it would have been different, but you didnt.
As far as any damage thats between you and the towing company. They are expected to do a job in a professional manner.

Carry on.
these threads crack me up.... woe is me...I was so wronged...
It wasn't anyone's fault that you were pulled over but yours... plain and simple. once the cops decided to impound the car, which the have the full right to do, they are within their right to "search and secure" the car prior to the tow company showing up. another post above stated that most cops just issue tickets/warnings and tell you to go home. I am betting that an attitude caused these officers to decide to tow your car. I find it funny that everyone is quick to jump on the "get a lawyer" bandwagon. dude, you were doing something illegal, suck it up and pay for it...
like the post states above, there are going to be 3 stories. yours, the cops and the truth.
as far as the damage to the car, I would go after the tow company in small claims court. take plenty of pics PRIOR to driving the car off the tow lot, including pics of the truck that towed your car.

***Update: Well my Evo is still in the impound. Friday I drove to the dealership (all the way in Mannasas Virginia) to get another temp tag. He issued me a 1 day transport tag to get the car out of the impound and inspected. Once I had it inspected the dealership could give me the tags on the spot. So I am on my way back from the dealership driving my 1994 Toyota Paseo (my reliable daily beater) and my tire blows. I am stranded an hour away from where I live, and I have no tools, no jack, and no spare tire. A friend arrives 3 hours later and has a spare tire but he assumed I had a lug wrench, but I didn't. So we say screw it, and I leave the car on the side of the road (interstate 66 east). To make things safe I leave the car all the way to the left, almost rubbing up against the median wall. We make it back to the police station (Laurel MD) and they give me a huge hassle for not having proof of ownership (the dealership didn't issue my title yet) so I have to explain my story to a police officer at the station, and me and my friend manage to finally convince him to give us the tow release form. The officer who wrote me the citations forgot to write up a report and it took them 50 minutes to write up a report and issue the tow release. By this time the impound closes. We plead on the phone for the impound to stay open for us, but they refused to stay a minute after 5:00 pm. The transport tag the dealership issued me is still good for the next day (Saturday) until midnight, so I would just have to wait until the next morning (and pay for the $25.00 extra day fee) to pick the car up. So me and my friend decide to go to some party in Ellicott City and we both get really ripped. I pass out on someone's couch drunk as hell and at 5:00 am my friend tells me he has to go to Towson (one of our local hot chick college) for a bootie call. So I'm like "you better be back tommorow morning!". I wake up at 10:00 am and call the tow place, they tell me they are only open until 12:30 pm on Saturdays. I frantically call my friend over and over to come pick me up. He doesn't answer his cell phone. I'm stranded at this house with no ride, and all the paperwork for the impound (tags and police release form) are in my friend's car. After calling him over 50 times in a row, my friend finally wakes up and by this time it is already 12:15 pm. I managed to talk someone at the police impound to stay until 1:00 pm. I prayed that my friend would make it, but by the time he made it to the house it was already 1:00 pm, and the police impound closes. They aren't open on Sunday so I would now have to wait until monday morning, and pay the extra $50.00 for storage. The transport tags that the dealership issued me are now expired. At this point I was at a loss for words. I figured the best thing to do was get a spare tire for my daily ride so that I would at least have a working car. Me and my friend stop by the local junkyard (Crazy Ray's for all you DC/Baltimore locals) and I grab a tire + rim from another wrecked Toyota Paseo for $20.00. The tire was in new condition so it was a bargain. We head back down to Manassas Virginia where my Toyota had been left stranded on Route 66. I knew the exact spot where I had left the car, and when we arrived there the car was gone. I began to freak out. My friend calms me down, and we call 411 to get the # for the Virginia state police's general non-emergency number. We track down the impound where my Toyota was being held at, and $216.00 later (and after putting the new tire on) I was driving it out of the impound. They told me the reason the car was towed was because the police considered it "unsafe" on the median. The car had been left in that spot for less than 24 hours. I drive down to the dealership and they issue me yet another transport tag for Monday.
So there you have it. Two days, two cars impounded. Tommorow (Monday) I go to the Laurel Impound to get the Evo out and inspected (and tagged). Wish me luck, I think I might need it.

So from what you're saying only stupid people join the Marines as a last resort after getting out of High School? May I ask what branch of US military you graced with your presence? I joined the Marines right out of High School because I didn't want to go straight into College and wanted to get a good skill set for a career. I now have a very good career working for the Federal Government civil service working in a Laboratory calibrating test equipment for the military as well as outside organizations, and I make very good money doing it. Just because you join the Marines or the Army does not mean you are not an intelligent individual, and any time you would like to compare brain pans, I would be happy to entertain.
Funny how Marines are contacted with all sorts of law enforcement agencies, to include US Marshals, to come work for them due to their training. I know quite a few guys that got out and went back home with jobs as cops. Oh, and BTW if you think the government only gives you $1,000 a month you're even dumber then you sound. You make a pretty decent living in the military once you reach E-5, and if you go the Officer route, you can make VERY good money.
Ok, I’m off my soap box now…..just can’t stand it when somebody who has no idea what they’re talking about tries to talk trash about our military folks.
As for the guy getting your car impounded…that sucks to hear bro, you definitely need to get yourself a good attorney if the cop was pushing you and threatening you. Hope it all works out for you.
man dude, that's wrong bro, sorry that you went through all of that BS. I agree with most of the members here, hire a lawyer, I am pretty sure that they need your consent or a warrant to search your ride or else they wil be violating your 4th amendment rights. I hope all goes well for you.

Once they decided to impound your car, they may have been required to search it, FYI. No warrant necessary. Technically, this isnt a search, but an 'inventory', so that everything can be accounted for incase something disappears in impound. He is, at this point, responsible for your property.
Also, I would definitely file a complaint against the second officer. He just sounds like an a dick. If you cannot read his name, ask when you call. They can find out what his name and badge number are, it is all recorded somewhere.
