Wingless really is the Sleeper Mode
Wingless really is the Sleeper Mode
Just thought I'd mention a few incidents showing how most people completely discount my red Evo IX now that it's wingless:
I didn't really want my in-laws teasing me about getting such an outrageous car, so I waited until I removed the wing before showing it to them. My father in law (an architect who just turned 70 and beats on his old cars) was completely fooled.
He saw it from the back, so he didn't really see the hood or mouth, and said, "This is exactly what I need; just a good, basic economy car." I said, "Yeah; that's true. You should get one." My mother-in-law had almost the same reaction, except she thought it looked just like my (red) RX-8! Go figure.
I met a bunch of friends for lunch today and parked nose in. After lunch, one of the girls said, "Let's see your new car!" I was reluctant because without the wing, from behind it really looks pretty tame and ... well ... almost econo-boxy, at least to these people, who drive SUVs and big sedans and laugh at compact cars. Not car people at all.
I agreed to show it to her, though, so of course the whole gang follows us over there; like eight people, including some people I didn't really know.
The whole walk over to the car I'm trying to explain that it's this street-legal rally car, see, and the money all went into the drive train, brakes, and suspension, and it doesn't look like much on the outside, yada yada yada.
We get to the car, and everyone is asking, "You mean this is it? This is your new car?" Meaning, "Man, it looks so cheap." And I'm thinking, yeah, if you don't know what to look for, it doesn't look like much.
I tried to explain some more, but got nowhere so I just laughed and gave up. Then I gave the girl a ride back to her office in it, and she encouraged me to punch it, so I did; gave her a bit of a rush. That was fun.
I don't know why I just told that story except to say, to 99% of the world, a wingless Evo looks just like a basic econo-box like a Corolla S. And yet when I see one, my heart starts pounding.
But this weekend I'm adding a red vortex generator, and with luck my standard Lancer spoiler, with the center pillar removed, should arrive next week. So they should butch things up a bit.

There are times when I wonder what it would be like without the wing or with a small wing. It would be cool to have them be interchangeable for different situations. Good luck in your stealth fighter!
Cool!
Nothing quite like the goofy grin on my passenger's face after a test ride
I am also thinking about getting a CF trunk but then it wouldn't look very "sleeper" on a yellow car.

Im debating to take my wing off too. first off the clear coat is shot so it looks like crap. And its just so big. I know it kinda "makes" the evo, but it doesnt look bad without it. You car looks nice and you can still tell what it is. I think it looks more like a drag racing car without the wing too. Have you seen another evo with the spoiler like your saying your going to do. Im interested in how that will look.
Thanks! In this thread I attached a photo of an Evo VIII with the wing I'm getting.
I ordered it from Spoiler Depot for about $120, plus another $30 to remove the center post and fill in the holes and $80 for painting. If the bolts don't line up I plan to modify the spoiler, not my decklid, which already has too many holes.

That standard spoiler looks good. But thats a lot of money. Im guessing that the 120 is for an unpainted spoiler? I wonder if I could fill the holes and paint it myself(well I know I could, but would it look good).
I see Fresno Mitsubishi plates on that thing. You from Fresno? Hopefully you did NOT pay any of the crazy markups they always have on EVO's. They lost my business trying to say that "everyone pays that". I went down to Selma Mitsu and got a white IX rs for a little under msrp and they had to go to quite a ways on a dealer trade to get it. Had it in 24hrs though via flatbed. Love the car. Obviuosly im wingless too so I understand what you mean. I for one love the wingless look and would hate the attention the wing brings the car. If 95% of everyone thinks its a "lancer".. good then they won't bother it or me.
Thanks, all. That $120 for the wing was unpainted; another $80 for the paint, etc. And I'm keeping the OEM wing for occasional use.
I bought it at Fresno Mitsubishi but I bargained for it; paid South Coast's price plus $500, which was worth it to me to save me the trip down south.
Good fun: I'll post the pix when I install the spoiler.
