Angry Fried Clutch

Well, i went back to my dealer yesterday to pick up my tags, and was talking with their service manager. apparently, one of the evos has already been brought in to have the clutch replaced.. it was fried at 1400 miles!!! I was the 1st person to pick one up there, and if i remember correctly, the blue evo (the one serviced) was only sold lats week.. somebody beat the hell out of that car. heres the kicker. the service manager said they didnt want to cover it, but they ended up doing so. they said that if they get any more, they're going to try as hard as possible to not warranty it b/c they know people are racing and beating the cars up. It's a $1500 clutch replacement, and unless they find that it was not adjusted correctly at the factory, THEY'RE NOT GOING TO COVER IT. now maybe hes just trying to scare me, but i've spoken with this guy before, and he seemed to be telling me as a friendly warning.

Go easy on the drivetrain guys... the clutch is still the weakest link, and you're screwing any of us who might actually have a valid problem besides dropping it at 6500 rpm's.

(btw, anybody know anybody in NOVA w/ a blue evo? maybe it was that kid who wrecked it)

Our clutches aren't covered. Why would the Evo's be?

As for the 1,400mi thing...just goes to show you all it takes is some hard launches at high revs. Mileage is only a good indicator of wear when there's no abuse. I really doubt there's many other ways to smoke a clutch that quickly otherwise.

$1500 clutch replacement? If they tell me that my warranty won't cover the damage I aint gonna put a stock clutch back in it, not for $1500 bucks. Dealers are dicks. They should warranty this car if we race it, that's all they have been saying about the car. Check out Mitsus big brochure, every other line of text in there is "supercar", "rally racer", "pocket rocket". If they dont think we're not gonna drive these cars like they depict it to be then they are idiots. Plus, you can switch out a clutch cheaper and probly faster than a dealer would.

Brakes and Clutch are usually not covered under warranty. Owners dumb enough to go dumping the clutch on a daily basis trying to get their 60ft down to 1.5 should start saving for a clutch.....

Your car dealership is not your Sponsor

The powertrain is covered, and the clutch is part of that... I'm sure a dealer will try everything to claim it wasn't manufacturer related though. Just don't be an idiot when you drive.

Last I checked it's covered for defects, not excessive wear or abuse.

well, most consumer would say that a clutch failing at 1400 miles, after a week of ownership is defective. (probably why the dealer covered it). we (and the dealer) know better..

just hope none of us have a genuine defect, and we get denied b/c of the smacktard dropping the clutch at high revs.

I already smell the clutch after any hard launch, so I can tell that its going to be the first wear item down for the count. What would a good aftermarket setup be for the Evo?

There are tons. It's pretty much "pick a high quality name brand you can afford" so far as I can tell. Remember when gvr4 just got his Evo VII from EI he'd smoked the clutch after a few heavy launches as well.

Seems to be pretty common.

You guys are lucky its just the clutch so far and not the tranny. There are going to be idiots out there that will keep dumping their clutches and this is the same thing that happened with the wrx. People started out having clutch problems then it because tranny problems. Look on any wrx board and you will see from the time the car came over till 2003 then subaru put in a part to make it where you could not dump the clutch, there are tons of tranny problems. After they put this part in 90% of the problems went away. Dumping the clutch on any awd car really is not that smart of an idea. I tried to give a friendly warning of this in another thread but got crapped on by everyone saying this tranny wasnt a weak *** wrx tranny etc. Thats not the point. The point is this will happen on ANY awd car if you abuse it.

Once trannys start to come in as failed, is a trickle down effect. Dealers will look for any reason to turn you down.

Just be safe guys and smart and enjoy your cars. Don't make it tough for everyone else that drives smart and runs into a real problem like was said above.

Marketing’s definition is to tell as big an almost lie as possible to make yourself look good without breaking any laws. The car may have been depicted as super car in a marketing brochure, but it isn't. It's just a road car with better than average suspension and more power. The warranty is meant to protect average Joe driver from manufacturer’s defect. I'm sure they knew that the car would be raced. I'm also just as sure that they will start to deny warranties based on "abuse" justified or otherwise. Racing has always been an expensive game to play. It will drive your maintenance cost up multiples of hundreds of percent based on the amount of racing you do. It is definitely the road to more tires, more brakes, more rotors, more oil changes, shorter engine life and yes more clutches. If you start to mod, who the hell knows what kind of weakness you will find in the stock parts you didn't mod. A stronger clutch could mean that synchros start failing or maybe some broken gears. If you drive it like the 4 door passenger commuter car that it is, the wear items will last the duration that they are intended. But where's the fun in that? If you drive it like the highly tuned high power tight suspension car that it is also, you're going to accelerate the wear. You gosta pay to play. I'm not saying that Mitsu should not pay to fix an item that is defective. They should. It is their responsibility to fix defective components and workmanship. I'm also saying that you have to be responsible for your own actions. You break it, you wear it out, and you pay for it. Did I mention that racing was EXPENSIVE.

Well my friend is getting his EVO's tranny rebuilt!! He kept grinding 3rd and 5th gears... It's taking them 1-2 weeks to have it repaired by a "certified tech"... Till then he's riding in their loaner (Nissan Pathfinder?).. Wierd...

clutches are considered wear and tear items in almost any manufacturer's book. you generally won't find them covered under original and even extended warranties.
