i remember reading that but how the heck does that shred the timing and oil pump belts, dent and crack the t case and tranny???

i guess the thing literally exploded.... sheesh!

 

The belts were probably ripped when a broken rod jammed itself into the block while still connected to the crank, and momentarily siezed the crank where the inertia of the other moving parts kept the belts spinning and the sudden stop of the crank gear shredded the belts. Most likely the transfer case was dented by the one of the internal parts that shot through the back of the block. The x-fer case sits directly behind the holes in #3 cylinder. The transmission case cracked (and x-fer case) when the blow caused the block to jump in random directions and the mounts wanted the tranny and x-fer to stay put.

All that, and the motor only blew at 2500-3000 RPM.

Thanks man. It hasn't been too bad yet, probably around 10 hours in the garage. The long part will be re-installing everything and getting out the torque wrench. I liked my old 83 Jeep CJ-7... That was back before they invented torquing bolts.

Anyone running the Driveshaft Shop's 500hp rear Axles on their Evo? I might pick up a set, probably a good idea. For $699 you can't go wrong!

 

Have you decided what you are going to do about the transfer case or tranny? If you find a good enough aluminum welder, you have a chance (a slim one) that they could be successfully re-used. You might be better off shelling out the cash for a new transmission housing and transfer case housing (the empty aluminum housings with no gears inside) and just swap over your internals. IF that was a military tranny and transfer case. we would weld that stuff up in aheart beat. A good welder should be able to take care of you there.

 

As for the tranny and X-fer cases, I'm probably going to end up sending them out to Shep and letting him have his way with them. the tranny has a 5th gear grind anyway, and I don't want a x-fer case to rip apart on me 2 days after re-installing everything. The tranny only needs a bellhousing, the main case is fine. If I am going to hit my 500 goal, having those rebuilt seems like a good idea. Especially since this car will see ALOT of track time.

keep up the good work, you'll have to let us know how that 5th gear grind is after the rebuild (and total costs involved), i have a similar issue now

 

It should not be a problem after the rebuid, considering as how all the parts will be brand new I'll let you know though
