Intercooler pipe blew off

Wile in top gear I start boosting and PHSh. I thought "what the hell I don't have a open dump blow off valve". Total loss of power, had to pull over. I'm thinking " WTF, 5000 miles on the car and I'm on the side of the highway with the flashers on". I had a DSM for 5 years and was used to a Mitsu breaking down on me, they don't totaly screw you over, but leave you on the side of the road fixing it. I pop the hood and sure enough the intercooler hose to throttle body had blown off. I had no tools since i figured a new car would not need them...Umm yea, anyway I loosened the worm clamp enough so i could fit the hose back over the throttle body and still have some clamping force on it. I baby it the rest of the way home blowing the hose off one more time cuz the frigging turbo spools way to easy, something one does not notice untill this happens to them. I was so stressed tying to drive the car with no boost. After I got home I cranked the clamp down as tight as I could with a screw driver as i didn't want to strip it.

FYI, Even though you spent 30+ grand on a new EVO, check to make sure the intercooler hose clamps are on TIGHT. Are there any other clamps that tend to let go or just the throttlebody one?

you should really use more than a screwdriver to tighten those down, try a socket... You might want to upgrade to t-clamps...

I had that happen to me with only 1000 miles and was stock at the time. It blew off from the throttle body as well, needless to say, I carry tools from now on and have invested in some T-bolts.

The hose is pretty squashed, I used a 10mm nut driver

I actually did that in my Eclipse once. Put the harder spring in my MBC and turned it up too much. Saw the turbo skipe to about 27 lbs before I let off. Odd thing was, must have just loosened it because it didn't pop off for like 5 more minutes. Anyway, when it did I thought I blew the turbo or engine. Needless to say, I was pretty happy to see it was only the licp.

T-Bolt clamps, it is the best thing you can do. I had the one from the throttle body and the lower part that connects to the intercooler.

Yea, I was luck as hell. Had the car pulled over in a driveway under it trying to get the coupling back on. Someone pulled over that had a whole mess of tools and stayed until I got it tightened.

Thanks, dude, where ever you are!

I'm guessing he's talking about the lower intercooler pipe which connects from the turbo outlet to the intercooler.

I had the same thing happen to me only it wasn't a psshhh ........ it was a BOOOOMM!. I after I pulled over (and changed my underwear) I looked under the car figuring that I dropped the entire engine on the freeway. Nope just blew the tube off at the intake manifold. I of course had no tools, screwdriver, pocket knife, paper clips, nothing on me . So I limped along the side of the freeway to the next exit, borrowed a screwdriver from the golden arches, then tightened it down the best I could so I could get home. I now carry a small tool kit (with a 10mm socket) just in case.
